We have co-champions for the very first time...Greer Garson and Doris Day

Well I recently had to restart the final match in this year's favorite classic movie actress tourney due to the poll being compromised in what looked like in favor of Doris Day. Well now the same thing has happened again as one of my best and very trustworthy friends told me the poll is allowing her to just vote as many times as she wants and that should not be the case. I set it up as one vote per person per device. So with Greer Garson achieving so many votes in a short period of time, the only fair and just thing to do is declare them both co-champions, which marks the first time that has ever happened. It appears that it was a technical glitch that swung both ways.  I still think this was a marvelous tourney this year despite this unfortunate event happening. I like to thank all the fans that voted and the ones that alerted me of voting issues. And thanks again to John of mythical monkey and Virginie of the wonderful world of cinema in helping me putting on this year's tourney. And congratulations to both Doris Day and Greer  Garson for being this year's co-champions.  Until next year, keep the classics alive!

Poll tampering for the final match

I've seen this many times before when the tallies in a match started zooming up ridiculously fast over a short period of time. Doris Day just registered over 30 votes in less than 5 minutes, which even with word spreading fast that seems highly irregular. So I have no choice but to restart the match. It only takes one person to ruin the fun and excitement of everyone else. So the first poll is now deleted and the new poll is set up below. It will run through Thursday evening as planned. Sorry to all those were honest about voting the right way.

It's Greer Garson vs Doris Day for all the marbles....

It's been another great tourney and now we have arrived at the final match. 40's era champion Greer Garson vs 50's era champion Doris Day. Some important milestones for both ladies have been achieved this tourney so I wanted to give everyone the stats and achievements that were accomplished. First Greer set a new record for most votes achieved during the first 6 matches with a whopping 1516 votes, shattering the previous mark set by Natalie Wood last year of 1093 votes. And let's not forget about her record setting match with Rosalind Russell which yielded the most votes on any match in tourney history with 1058 votes. Greer also joins the group of women to have competed in back to back final fours. She joins Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Myrna Loy, Bette Davis and Natalie Wood. But Bette Davis is still the only woman to appear in back to back championship matches. Go Bette! Meanwhile Doris Day achieved some memorable stats as well. She currently has 24 wins in tourney play, second only to Grace Kelly's 25 and if she wins, Doris will tie Grace in that distinction. And Doris joins the list of actresses to compete in multiple final fours along with Myrna Loy, Grace Kelly, Natalie Wood, Bette Davis, Greer Garson, and Audrey Hepburn. Ok here are the numbers that Greer and Doris achieved in this year's tourney

GREER GARSON
40'S ERA CHAMPION
Tourney record: 11-5
Number of Final Fours: 2
How she got here:
defeated Esther Williams 74-17
defeated Rita Hayworth 125-34
defeated Katharine Hepburn 362-173
defeated Olivia de Havilland 196-128
defeated Rosalind Russell 601-457
defeated Julie Andrews 158-101
total votes accumulated so far: 1516
What's at stake for her: This marks Greer second consecutive final four appearance and now her first championship match. That proved to be the winning formula for Natalie Wood's win last year, will it work for Greer as well?

VS
DORIS DAY
50'S ERA CHAMPION
Tourney record: 24-5
Number of Final Fours: 2
How she got here:
defeated Jane Powell 74-13
defeated Marilyn Monroe 79-36
defeated Debbie Reynolds 65-27
defeated Thelma Ritter 52-37
defeated Deborah Kerr 194-63
defeated Myrna Loy 169-139
total votes accumulated so far: 633
What's at stake for her: This marks Doris first championship match after reaching two Final Fours. If she wins, she would represent the first actress from the 50's era to win. All previous winners have come from the 30's era (three times), the 40's era (once) and the 60's era (once)

The championship match poll can now be voted on and the match will run through Thursday evening at 6pm. Good luck to both women!

Greer Garson to meet Doris Day in the championship match

Both semi-final matches in the 6th Annual Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney started and finished a different way, but the results were pretty much the same. In match one Doris Day jumped out big over Myrna Loy and cruised to a big lead of  nearly 55 votes at one point. But scrappy Myrna fought back today and got within 30 votes before finally losing 169-139. Meanwhile over in the second match, Greer Garson and Julie Andrews had a tight one for the most part, only separated by 15 votes for the most part until Greer finally started pulling away on Wednesday. The result, Greer 158-101 over Julie. So now the stage is set for the championship match between Greer Garson and Doris Day. This will be the first such match for both ladies and one will win the crown as Favorite Classic Movie Actress of 2016. I will write up a pre-match post tomorrow then start the match on Sunday morning. Should be an epic match as both women fanbases have came out strong this year!

The Final Four is now underway...

Ladies and gentlemen this year's Final Four in the Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney is now underway. These two matches will run through Friday evening with the winners going on to the championship match on Saturday. Here are the four women who made it to the big dance.
Stats:
Myrna Loy and Greer Garson are back for their 2nd consecutive Final Four. The only other actresses do that are Grace Kelly, Natalie Wood, and Audrey Hepburn.

Doris Day 23 tourney wins are the second most in tourney history. Only Grace Kelly has won more matches with 25.

After having bad tourney history in the first 4 tourneys, Greer Garson and Julie Andrews seem to have righted the ship. Greer was winless in her first 4 tourneys and Julie was 2-2. But since then the pair have both gone 10-5, which sets up for an intriguing match.

Greer Garson and Myrna Loy have something in common: they both lost to eventual winner Natalie Wood in last year's final four. Loy lost 323-173 while Greer lost 543-318. Natalie's fans were out in force that year.

Greer Garson is currently in 2nd place in tourney history with 1358 votes. She sits behind Natalie Wood's all-time high of 1416 votes but it looks like Greer is going to shatter that mark easily!

Greer, Myrna and Doris are all repeat final four finalists, while this marks Julie Andrews first final four appearance.

MYRNA LOY
30'S ERA CHAMPION
Tourney record: 21-5
Number of final fours: 2
VS
DORIS DAY
50'S ERA CHAMPION
Tourney record: 23-5
Number of final fours: 2

GREER GARSON
40'S ERA CHAMPION
Tourney Record: 10-5
Number of final fours: 2
VS
JULIE ANDREWS
60'S ERA CHAMPION
Tourney Record: 10-5
Number of Final Fours: 1

We have our Final Four in this year's Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney

Well only one match is officially over but the other three matches are pretty much done too
as the leads are insurmountable in the 2 hours left. First that epic match in the 40's era
bracket came to a close with Greer Garson pulling away from Rosalind Russell 601-457. Both actresses fanbases came out big time in support of their ladies through blogland, facebook, twitter, etc. This means Greer will be in consecutive final fours after going winless in the first
four tourneys she competed in. Talk about turnaround. She joins Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Bette Davis and Natalie Wood in that distinction.

Oh wait add Myrna Loy to that list as well. Myrna is rolling over Margaret Lockwood in the 30's era bracket by the count of 152-33. Meanwhile in the 50's era looks like Doris Day will be making her 2nd final four appearance after throttling Deborah Kerr 194-63. And finally in the 60's era, looks like Julie Andrews will be going to the big dance for the very first time after her dominating win over Shirley MacLaine 113-60. So to break it down for you Greer and Myrna are two of the four pre-tourney top seeds to make it to the final four. Doris Day returns to the final four for the second time while this will  be Julie's first time. I will have the final four matches taking place here on my blog starting tomorrow. And I will do a complete post about their records and stats tonight.

GREER GARSON 601-457 over ROSALIND RUSSELL
MYRNA LOY 152-33 over MARGARET LOCKWOOD
DORIS DAY 194-63 over DEBORAH KERR
JULIE ANDREWS 113-60 over SHIRLEY MACLAINE

Round 4 results: DORIS DAY edges DEBORAH KERR in a thrilling match, everything else is a blow-out

The Sweet Sixteen Round has come to a close and out of the 8 matches only one had any real drama. In one of the best matches all tourney so far, Doris Day and Deborah Kerr traded blows all week long with multiple lead changes to see Doris finally escape with a one vote win 38-37. In the other 50's era match-up, it was Audrey Hepburn finally beating Grace Kelly after losing two previous times, 54-20. That is the worst loss Grace Kelly has ever had in tourney play. Hell it makes for only her 4th loss compared to her 20 wins. Here are the complete scores of all the other matches in the other eras:

30'S ERA:

BARBARA STANWYCK defeated GRETA GARBO 49-16

MYRNA LOY defeated JOAN BLONDELL 43-22

In the 40's era championship match it will be Bette Davis vs Olivia de Havilland
In the 50's era championship match it will be Audrey Hepburn vs Doris Day
In the 60's era championship match it will be Elizabeth Taylor vs Natalie Wood

You couldn't have asked for better era final matches as each winner will move on to the final four. I will write a post tomorrow detailing the above matches. Can't wait to get started!

Round 2 results: Elizabeth Taylor cruises to another easy victory

Liz is all smiles after her win over Julie Andrews

The first two brackets in the 60's era, All-American Girls and British Invasion have just wrapped up. And three of the four matches became very tight down the stretch. Final four finalist from last year, Diana Rigg was sent home early after losing to Jean Simmons 27-20. Diana did make a late rally as she was down by as many as 13 votes yesterday, but she did not have enough time left to make a comeback win. The other match in the British Invasion bracket saw Elizabeth Taylor crush Julie Andrews 37-11. This match was expected to be a close wire thriller and it turned out to be anything but as Liz led easily from the start. Over in the All-American Girls bracket, it was Anne Bancroft outlasting Paula Prentiss 28-20 and Lee Remick withstanding a furious late day charge from Sharon Tate to win 26-19. Congratulations to all the winners and I will have the other two brackets (Song and Dance/A Foreign Affair) up and running within a few hours.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR 37-11 over JULIE ANDREWS
JEAN SIMMONS 27-20 over DIANA RIGG
ANNE BANCROFT 28-20 over PAULA PRENTISS
LEE REMICK 26-19 over SHARON TATE

Here are the results from the 30's era which Desiree just wrapped up as well:

1930s era

Greta Garbo 35-18 vs. Miriam Hopkins
Ann Dvorak 30-23 vs. Ruth Chatterton
Myrna Loy 43-9 vs. Constance Bennett

MARCH MADNESS...Classic Movie Actress Style gears up again

*This cool photoset comes courtesy of darlinghepburn at Tumblr

The 4th Annual Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney returns next weekend and the 132 field of competing actress across four decades is wide open. The previous three champions: Irene Dunne, Ginger Rogers and Carole Lombard are ineligible to compete so we will definitely have another new winner. The top 4 seeds heading into this year's tourney are Barbara Stanwyck (30's era); Bette Davis (40's era); Doris Day (50's era) and Diana Rigg (60's era) based on their finish in last year's tourney. Bette Davis is the overall top seed since she made it to the final match against Carole Lombard. But Stanwyck is in a much more coveted spot, as all three previous winners have come from the 30's era. This should be another fun tourney with so many compelling stories. I'm sure that two time Final Four finalists Natalie Wood and Grace Kelly look to erase their early exits from last year while Audrey Hepburn looks to go a few rounds further after she had so many early dominating victories and still holds the only shut-out match in tourney history (thanks to a 55 point drubbing of Pier Angeli). My friends Desiree, John and Kristen will once again help with the festivities as I will  host the 60's era here on All Good Things, while Desiree holds center court with the 30's era, Kristen will duties for the 40's era while John will handle the 50's era. The fun begins Sunday, March 2nd with 64 matches taking place in the first round. I will post more information and brackets showcasing the matches over the next few days. GAME ON!

Doris Day and Lucille Ball team up for the hilarious Have I Got A Story To Tell You (1960)

Doris Day and Lucille Ball are a perfect pair in the comedy, Have I Got A Story To Tell You. The story has our two gals as rival bookstore owners who are forced to team up to stop a major bookstore chain from pushing their small stores out of the picture. Doris plays Lucy Street, whose store is called The Happy Book Store. Lucy plays Ann Morgan, whose store is called Friends and Books. Their stores are located right across the street from one another and have been for over 10 years. Lucy and Ann are respectful of each other and even share coffee every now and then but for the most part remain rivals. That is until major chain Big City Books seeks to expand their chain by opening up a store right in their small town of Kanesville, Colorado. They send their best PR man, Jerry McQueen (played by Tony Curtis) to convince the ladies that this is the best option for their businesses and town. Lucy and Ann band together to declare war on Big City Books but Jerry with his smooth talking ways tries to convince them otherwise. Jerry ends up romancing both women who fall hard until they come to their senses. When Jerry fails at his job, the president of Big City Books, Mr. Langford (Claude Rains) comes to town to handle the deal himself.

Lucy as Ann Morgan

This is a simple comedy that may be light on story but great on chemistry between Day and Ball. It's a treat to see these two women converse and engage in pratfalls and getting one up on romeo Tony Curtis. It has a breezy run time of only 90 minutes but there are great comic scenes. Including the opening scene where both Lucy and Ann arrive at work to their respective stores and kind of mirror each other. It's a funny scene that lets both actresses mimic each other wonderfully. And then the scenes where Tony Curtis tries to seduce both women are funny as well. Have I Got A Story To Tell You is worth a look.

Tony Curtis and Doris Day

Cast:
Doris Day.................Lucy Street
Lucille Ball................Ann Morgan
Tony Curtis...............Jerry McQueen
Mr. Langford............Claude Rains
Patsy Kelly...............Esther
Pamela Tiffin.............Jilly

Oh btw in case people start scratching their heads about this movie, this is another in my series of fantasy films I just thought of and posted. In short, it doesn't exist. Just a fun exercise for me to work my imagination! Hope you guys liked it.

THE FINAL FOUR begins tomorrow

The Final Four for the 2013 Favorite Classic Movie Actress will begin tomorrow and I think this year's foursome represents each specific era quite well. These four actresses: Carole Lombard, Bette Davis, Doris Day and Diana Rigg are all making their first final four appearances. In the case of Diana Rigg, it is her debut tourney. I was getting used to see tourney mainstays like Grace Kelly and Natalie Wood being in the final four that it is something of a shock to not see them here this year. But the show must go on and here is the rundown on this year's final four.

CAROLE LOMBARD
Tourney Record 13-3 (through 3 years)
wins so far:
Barbara Stanwyck 36-27
Joan Blondell 39-20
Myrna Loy 61-21
Jean Harlow 50-31
Margaret Dumont 58-7

VS

DORIS DAY
Tourney Record 9-2
wins so far:
Ava Garder 40-19
Audrey Hepburn 34-32
Jane Russell 54-22
Cyd Charisse 51-17
Vera-Ellen 45-13

Carole has logged 244 votes in her favor in her five wins for a 48 vote average.
Carole leads the final four finalists with most votes gained. Hope that's a good sign.
Doris has logged 224 votes in her favor in her five wins for a 44 vote average.
So they are pretty close and will go into this match evenly matched.

**************************************************
BETTE DAVIS
Tourney Record 10-2
wins so far:
Rita Hayworth 25-13
Judy Garland 44-39
Vivien Leigh 32-18
Olivia de Havilland 31-13
Jane Wyman 55-4

VS

DIANA RIGG
Tourney Record 5-0 (first year)
wins so far:
Shirley Jones 30-17
Catherine Deneuve 38-14
Julie Andrews 48-20
Angela Lansbury 44-40
Julie Christie 43-19

Bette has logged 187 votes in her favor over five wins for an average of 37 votes per match.
Diana has logged 203 votes in her favor over five wins for an average of 40 votes per match.
Diana has had some impressive wins, particularly over 60's titans Catherine Deneuve and Julie Andrews. She did struggle with Angela Lansbury though. While Bette has been pretty consistent with her only real close match coming against last year's final four finalist Judy Garland.

I will have the polls up early tomorrow morning and will have the matches run through either Monday evening or Tuesday evening. Not quite sure yet.

THE ELITE EIGHT

From the sweet sixteen round we are now at the elite eight. These upcoming four matches will decide who makes the final four. The eight women vying for the crown of 2013 favorite classic movie actress are:

1 BARBARA STANWYCK VS 1 CAROLE LOMBARD

Both women are number 1 seeds from their respective categories...Babs from
Pre-Code Babes and Carole from Funny Ladies

1 BETTE DAVIS VS 1 RITA HAYWORTH

Bette is top seed from Drama Queens and Rita is top seed from Sophisticates

2 DORIS DAY VS 2 AVA GARDNER

Doris is the second seed from Singer/Dancers while Ava is second seed from
Drama Queens

7 SHIRLEY JONES VS 7 DIANA RIGG

And finally two seven seeds are still hanging around, Shirley representing
Song and Dance while Diana represents British Invasion. The last time a
seed this low was still around was when Irene Dunne, who was seeded 10th
in the original tourney went all the way and won the whole thing. So there's
a chance one of these women can make some magic again.

Matches begin today..
