I Love It When Things Work Out Perfectly....Happy Birthday Grace Kelly!

So today is Grace Kelly's birthday, which I already posted about on my Facebook blog page. But then I realized today happens to be Tuesday, which anyone who follows my blog knows that I have a series called If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly. I usually post photos, reviews of her films and just anything I feel like about Grace on those specific days. So the fact that her birthday happens to fall on a Tuesday this year is just wonderful timing that I had to post about it. Here are some lovely photos of Princess Grace on this special day!

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly

I haven't done a Grace Kelly Tuesday post in awhile so I figure I would do one right quick before Tuesday ends. Just a few choice quotes from Princess Grace herself.

Hollywood amuses me. Holier-than-thou for the public and unholier-than-the-devil in reality.
I'll tell you one of the reasons I'm ready to leave. When I first came to Hollywood five years ago, my makeup call was at eight in the morning. On this movie it's been put back to seven-thirty. Every day I see Joan Crawford, who's been in makeup since five, and Loretta Young who's been there since four in the morning. I'll be god-damned if I'm going to stay in a business where I have to get up earlier and earlier and it takes longer and longer for me to get in front of a camera.
I hated Hollywood. It's a town without pity. I know of no other place in the world where so many people suffer from nervous breakdowns, where there are so many alcoholics, neurotics, and so much unhappiness.

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly..a short story

Just a short little story about Grace on my weekly series dedicated to her. Now it takes awhile to get to Grace but bear with me. It was many years ago when I was in the army and stationed in Germany. I was age 22 and it was my first time away from home. My girlfriend back home, Amy had broken up with me over the phone after I was away from her all of 6 months. So it took me awhile to start going out trying to meet new girls. And I did meet a few girls, some Americans and some Germans. But according to my fellow soldier and co-worker, Lisa, I had a problem which she gladly told me about. It went something like this, not word for word, but pretty much like this:

Let me set the scene first...I was outside the office looking out at the traffic on the streets of Germany, melancholy about my latest relationship problems. Sgt. Lisa Baker comes out...

Lisa: Hawes? what are you doing out here?
Me: Nothing..just thinking..
Lisa: what now?
Me: nothing..damn..just..Tanya hasn't called me in days
Lisa: who?
Me: Tanya..the girl I met a few weeks ago..went out a few times..
Lisa: damn Hawes..you know what your problem is?
Me: ummm..gee I didnt know I had a problem.
Lisa: well you do..wanna know what it is?
Me: yes..please tell me my problem Baker..
Lisa: You are too nice Hawes. You treat these girls you meet too special.
Me: What are you talking about?
Lisa: Every girl you meet, you treat them like Grace Kelly..you put them on a pedestal. And you just met them.
Me: I do not...you don't know what you're talking about.
Lisa: really Hawes...the one girl you met when we all went out a few months ago..
Me: you mean Gabbi?
Lisa: whatever her name was? Did you not buy her flowers the next day? Did you not want to introduce her to the entire unit saying she was your destiny?
Me: ummm..not to that extent.
Lisa: or how about Kathy? She gave you one little kiss and you was ready to marry her right then and there...
Me: OK, ok, ok...maybe I am a little prone to fall in love kinda quick but I do not treat girls like Grace Kelly. There is only one Grace Kelly.
Lisa: Wake up Hawes! This is not the movies!
Me: I know..I know..

Then I don't remember much after that but thought it would be cool to share on this Grace Kelly day!

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly

Been awhile since I did a post on Grace Kelly for my Tuesday series, so here we go. And it's kind of a cross between this and another of my recurring series, By The Numbers. I just wanted to shed some light on how much love I have for Grace. With some numbers and stats.

Posts written about Grace: 73 - making her second only to Carole Lombard's 75 posts as the most
written about actress. All are not specifically posts about Grace but she does get mentioned in every single one of them. Oh make that 74 now, counting this one.

Grace is my 8th favorite actress of all time.

Number of matches Grace has won in match play: 13 (2nd most is Natalie Wood with 10)

Number of tourneys Grace has won: 1 (Favorite Leading Lady in a Hitchcock Film)

Most views of a Grace Kelly post: 685 (this one here:  classic-movie-actress-tournament-1950s

So there you have it..some numbers and facts about Grace. And don't expect me to slow down anytime soon with my coverage of her.

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly - Her films to TV ratio

We all know that Grace Kelly made a limited number of films before giving up Hollywood to marry Prince Rainier of Monaco. She made 11 films, most of which were critical and commercial successes. Most likely she would have had a long and enduring film career. But I was surprised at the amount of TV work she did before her movie stardom skyrocketed. She appeared in 18 TV series and one tv movie. That's quite impressive considering she only acted from 1950 - 1956. Now for most of these series, she only did one episode but still that is amazing. Some of the series she starred in included: Big Town, The Clock, Somerset Maugham TV Theatre, The Prudential Family Playhouse, CBS Television Workshop, Robert Montgomery Presents, and Actor's Studio (where she played Princess Alexandra, which she would later re-create for the film, The Swan). Just wanted to share this interesting fact about the wonderful Grace.

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly - Star of the Day on Facebook

My friend Marsha who does the terrific page Flick Chick on facebook and writes several blogs including A Person In The Dark is doing the theme of classic stars for the week. And today it's Grace Kelly. How about that. I think that is awesome. She asked for fans to share their favorite films and things about Grace.

My all time favorite Grace film is Rear Window. She was just amazing as Lisa Fremont. A woman who knew what she wanted and was a fabulous dresser. In fact I loved all three films she did for Hitchcock including To Catch A Thief and Dial M For Murder. Fave non-Hitch films would be The Country Girl, Mogambo and The Swan. She didn't do a whole lot of films before she left Hollywood and married Prince Rainier. But she still made quite the impact on me and fellow fans across the world. Here's to Grace Kelly on this special day. Thanks Marsha for choosing her. And here's the link to that wonderful page: FlickChick

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly: A Hitchcockian Beauty

Grace was the definitive Hitchcock actress. She appeared in three of his films. My favorite being Rear Window. The other two films were Dial 'M' For Murder and To Catch A Thief. No reviews or discussion needed on the incredible Grace and her performances in those films. So how about some photos?

As Margot Wendice in Dial 'M' For Murder (1954)...

As Lisa Fremont in Rear Window (1954)....

As Frances Stevens in To Catch A Thief (1955)...

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly...Guest Post by Jennifer Cooper

My most beautiful woman ever, Miss Grace Kelly!!!! <3 You totally have to use this for your on the beach blogs! :) Ooh, speaking of bloggage, when did you want to do that interview? :D
AT THE BEACH PHOTO #2 - GRACE KELLY

I know it's been a few months since I last did this series but one of my blogging friends contributed a nice piece to go along with a summer at the beach pic and wanted me to share it with all my friends. Her name is Jennifer and she writes the wickedly cool Musings of a Morleysaurus. So without further adieu here is Jennifer..Oh and check out Jenn's blog when you get a chance at the  link below
http://morleysaurus.blogspot.com/?zx=9e85a421210f2da2

When I saw that Monty was doing his At the Beach series on All Good Things, I instantly thought of Grace Kelly! Not only do I adore her as an actress, I also think that she is the most beautiful woman of all time. And unlike many women nowadays who are considered ‘most beautiful’ and ‘sexiest’ and what have you, Grace was a natural beauty, as natural and stunning as they came…as you can see from pictures of her on the beach especially. Her Oscar winning turn in The Country Girl is further proof of this, playing the long suffering and weary housewife to Bing Crosby’s alcoholic husband, she still looks absolutely gorgeous. Her performance in this film is astounding and was proof that she was really something special…the day she married Prince Ranier and became a princess was the day that Hollywood lost a true star…who only knows what she might have went on to achieve had she not become Princess Grace. Alfred Hitchcock most certainly lost one of his most wonderful ladies, and one he loved very dearly.

Rear Window
Over her short time as a Hollywood darling though, she managed to fit in some absolutely wonderful movies, starring with some of Hollywood’s greatest leading men. These included Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Clark Gable, with my personal favourites being with Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief and James Stewart in Rear Window. Rear Window is a film that is so perfect it still stands today as one of the greatest movies ever made. I love her performance in it; I love how she goes from ice queen, fashionista to this almost geeky investigator/fashionista! She is 110% adorable in this film, and an uncomparable beauty!

Cary Grant as John Robie (The Cat)

As this is the At the Beach series of pics, I urge you all to watch To Catch a Thief and enjoy some gorgeous French sunshine…all with a glass of brandy! I actually blame Hitchcock for my love of brandy, I only started drinking it as I was watching so many Hitchcock/Grace Kelly movies at the time and everyone drank brandy, so I wanted to drink brandy and pretend I was one of them, haha. Anyhoo, my brandy love aside, the chemistry between Grace and Cary Grant (my favourite classic movie actor) is brilliant! It’s all a very love/hate relationship between the two and it’s wickedly funny! Aww, to have seen more films with these two together, but alas, I can only dream! To Catch a Thief is one of my favourite Hichcock flicks, I mean it has Grace Kelly, Cary Grant, murder and glamour; what more could a girl want? So yes, guys in America enjoying the heatwave, why not take some time out and enjoy some good old Hitchcock with the lovely Grace, spending lots of time looking gorgeous on the beach!

Thanks Jennifer for this cool piece. I look forward to each and everyday at the beach, because I don't know what star will decide to drop by unexpectedly.

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly - Style Notes

Here are notable facts about Grace's fashion style:

Grace's wedding gown was paid for by MGM and was the most expensive garment ever made by Oscar winning designer Helen Rose, complete with 125-year old lace from a French museum, twenty-five yards of silk taffeta, one hundred yards of silk net, and thousands of seed pearls sewn into the veil and headdress.

Grace had fashioned her blue-blood persona long before the studios got hold of her. She spent hours a day perfecting her voice until her nasal tone was replaced by an elegant, almost British inflection.

After seeing the large diamond engagement rings flaunted by her fellow stars, Prince Rainier called Cartier to upgrade Grace's would-be eternity band of rubies and diamonds to a twelve-carat diamond flanked by two baguettes. She wore the ring in her final film, High Society (1956).

While pregnant with Princess Caroline, Grace often used her Hermes bag to shield her belly from prying paparazzi. The company nicknamed that purse "The Kelly bag".

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly - Rear Window is my favorite Grace Kelly film

I rank Rear Window as my number 2 all time Alfred Hitchcock film, just behind The Lady Vanishes and tied with the equally excellent Shadow of a Doubt. Window is a treat for the viewer with gorgeous cinematography and excellent camera work from Hitch. The story is simple enough: maverick photographer Jeff (played by the great Jimmy Stewart) is laid up in his New York apartment with a broken leg. He is being cared for by his very upscale girlfriend Lisa (the luminous Grace Kelly) and his nurse Stella (the always reliable Thelma Ritter). With little to do Jeff begins spying on his neighbors across the courtyard and what neighbors does he have. You have a highly limber blonde dancer; a troubled songwriter; a lonely woman who can't find a date; a busybody old lady; a couple with an energetic little dog; and last but not least the couple directly across from him with a very large man named Lars Thorwald (played by Raymond Burr-before Perry Mason) and his sickly wife. Well amidst all the goings on between Jeff and Lisa-she is ready to marry, he not so much and Stella's constant needling, Jeff notices strange things between Lars and his wife. Before you know it, the wife has gone and Jeff suspects foul play. It takes a little convincing to bring Lisa and Stella to his way of thinking but eventually they agree. The police, on the other hand are a different story. So the trio decide they need proof and with Jeff hobbled with a cast on his broken leg, Lisa and Stella decide to do the leg work (no pun intended). What follows is a game of suspense taken up to the highest level. Rear Window is a near perfect film with fabulous performances. Stewart is solid as always as is Ritter, who gets to say most of the film's best lines including "Nobody ever invented a polite word for a killin' yet". And Burr makes an effectively creepy bad man. But it's Grace Kelly who makes the movie for me. She just lights up the room whenever she comes in and the banter she trades with Stewart is pure bliss. I believe this to be Ms. Kelly's best film performance ever. Yes even better than her Academy Award winning role in The Country Girl. She never hits a wrong note as Lisa, and is a true joy to watch. Rear Window is one of the best films ever made and one of the best from ol Hitch.

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly - My First Grace Kelly Experience

I believe I was around 16 or 17 when I watched my first Grace Kelly movie. It was Dial M For Murder, her second pairing with Alfred Hitchcock. At the time, I had no idea who she was. The stars I had watched and knew about then were Cary Grant, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, etc.  You know, the big guns. And I had only seen one previous Hitchcock film, Rebecca. And that was in my English class. Anyway, I was immediately impressed with this lovely new leading lady. And not just because of her striking good looks. Just because the way she carried herself in this movie. She plays Margot Wendice, wife to Ray Milland's Tony, who is plotting to kill her. Now Grace's character did have an affair a few years ago and tries to work things out with her husband. It's to Kelly's considerable charm that I did not blame her at any point during this film. Even though she committed adultery, she was just so darned nice and sweet about it. I forgave her immediately. After watching Grace in this film, I had to see as many of her films as possible. And while she did like only 12 or so films, I have yet to see one where she didn't a good performance. I believe Rear Window's Lisa Fremont was her best character and film, just slightly ahead of Margot.  She won her only Oscar for the Country Girl, where she downplayed her gorgeous beauty with a solid performance. But Dial M For Murder will always hold a special place in my heart for me, as this was the first film in which I ever saw her in and was immediately captivated by her. Just a story I wanted to share on this Tuesday then it must be Grace Kelly day. If you have never seen Dial M For Murder, check it out this Sunday on TCM at 6 pm EST.
