If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly

I haven't done a Grace Kelly Tuesday post in awhile so I figure I would do one right quick before Tuesday ends. Just a few choice quotes from Princess Grace herself.

Hollywood amuses me. Holier-than-thou for the public and unholier-than-the-devil in reality.
I'll tell you one of the reasons I'm ready to leave. When I first came to Hollywood five years ago, my makeup call was at eight in the morning. On this movie it's been put back to seven-thirty. Every day I see Joan Crawford, who's been in makeup since five, and Loretta Young who's been there since four in the morning. I'll be god-damned if I'm going to stay in a business where I have to get up earlier and earlier and it takes longer and longer for me to get in front of a camera.
I hated Hollywood. It's a town without pity. I know of no other place in the world where so many people suffer from nervous breakdowns, where there are so many alcoholics, neurotics, and so much unhappiness.

Personal Quotes by Jane Wyman

Here are some personal quotes by Jane over the years...supplied by IMDB:

The opportunity for brotherhood presents itself every time you meet a human being.
I guess I just don't have a talent for it, some women just aren't the marrying kind - or anyway, not the permanent marrying kind, and I'm one of them.
[on winning the 1949 Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role of Johnny Belinda (1948)]: I won this award for keeping my mouth shut, so I think I'll do it again now.
[Who said in 1964 about growing up in an unhappy, humorless household]: Shyness is not a small problem; it can cripple the whole personality. It crippled mine for many years. As a child, my only solution to the problem of shyness was to hide, to make myself as small and insignificant as possible. All through grade school I was a well-mannered little shadow who never spoke above a whisper.

[on The Lost Weekend (1945)]: It was my biggest chance yet, and I was determined to make the most of it. I was determined to act from the inside out, to disregard all surface effects, and delve into the character of a sturdy woman who endured hardship stoically and who concealed a deeply emotional nature under a frosty, pragmatic exterior. I meditated on the role at great length; I wanted to get to the bottom of this woman's psyche. And in doing so I dredged up all the early hardships and disappointments in my own life, looking constantly for some points of reference that would link our respective inner schemes.
[When asked if she loved television better than film]: The reason I enjoy TV more than pictures now is that I like the pace better. You've got so many hours to do so much, and you have to get it done. I was on The Yearling for eleven and a half months! Sometimes we only did two pages of dialogue in four days.

[In 1984]: Women are like tea bags. You never know how strong they are until you put them in hot water.
[on commenting her newspaper interview in 1981 about her almost 50 year career in films]: I've been through four different cycles in pictures: the brassy blonde, then came the musicals, the high dramas, then the inauguration of television.
[In 1981]: The movies were changing, and the kinds of things that they were offering me I wouldn't look at, much less do. They were sordid. I have spent too many years in my craft, in my own little niche, my own little way, and it didn't matter to me. I didn't want to work anyway.

Personal Quotes by Joan Crawford

Every month when I choose my classic movie goddess, one of the things I like to do is list some of her favorite personal quotes as supplied by IMDB. So here we go with Miss Joan letting it all go...and the first one is a doozy!

I need sex for a clear complexion, but I'd rather do it for love.

[In The Women (1939)] Norma Shearer made me change my costume sixteen times because every one was prettier than hers. I love to play bitches and she helped me in this part.

Love is fire. But whether it is going to warm your hearth or burn down your house, you can never tell.

Nobody can imitate me. You can always see impersonations of Katharine Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. But not me. Because I've always drawn on myself only.
I think the most important thing a woman can have -- next to talent, of course, is -- her hairdresser.
You have to be self-reliant and strong to survive in this town. Otherwise you will be destroyed.

Recently I heard a 'wise guy' story that I had a party at my home for twenty-five men. It's an interesting story, but I don't know twenty-five men I'd want to invite to a party.
Send me flowers while I'm alive. They won't do me a damn bit of good after I'm dead.
Not that anyone cares, but there's a right and wrong way to clean a house.

There was a saying around MGM: "Norma Shearer got the productions, Greta Garbo supplied the art, and Joan Crawford made the money to pay for both".
If you've earned a position, be proud of it. Don't hide it. I want to be recognized. When I hear people say, "Joan Crawford!" I turn around and say, "Hi! How are you?"
If you're going to be a star, you have to look like a star, and I never go out unless I look like Joan Crawford the movie star. If you want to see the girl next door, go next door.

I'll say one thing...Joan definitely told it like it was!

Personal Quotes by Jean Arthur

Here are some personal quotes by my classic movie goddess for the month..Jean Arthur:
Why yes this is Jean...you want some quotes from me?

It's a strenuous job every day of your life to live up to the way you look on the screen.
I guess I became an actress because I didn't want to be myself.
If people don't like your work, all the still pictures in the world can't help you and nothing written about you, even oceans of it, will make you popular.
(on doing interviews) Quite frankly, I'd rather have my throat slit.

I bumped into every kind of disappointment, and was frustrated at every turn. Roles promised me were given to other players, pictures that offered me a chance were shelved, no one was particularly interested in me, and I had not developed a strength of personality to make anyone believe I had special talents. I wanted so desperately to succeed that I drove myself relentlessly, taking no time off for pleasures, or for friendships - yet aiming at the stars, I was still floundering.
[on her early acting days] My very "naturalness" was my undoing. I had to learn that to appear natural on the screen requires a vast amount of training, that is the test of an actor's art. It would be more spectacular if I could say that out of the hurt and humiliation of that failure was born a determination to success, to prove I had the makings of an actress. But it wouldn't be true. That urge came later.

[on her first marriage, which only lasted a day] Julian [Julian Anckner] looked a lot like Abraham Lincoln, and that's probably why I fell in love with him. One day we were out driving and he suddenly said, "Hey, why don't we get married?" So we lied about our ages and got married in a sheriff's office. You should have heard our families' reactions - all sorts of screaming and shouting and carrying on about suicide. Well, neither Julian nor I had enough income to make it possible for us to live together, so our marriage lasted one day.
[on making Only Angels Have Wings (1939)] I loved sinking my head into Cary Grant's chest.
[1977 comment on Gary Cooper] I loved working with Gary Cooper. Gary was my favorite. He was so terrific-looking, and so easy to work with.
A great looking couple..don't you think?

Anne Baxter personal quotes

Check out these two personal quotes from Anne from two of her most known films:

On All About Eve (1950) I patterned Eve [Harrington] after the understudy I had in a Broadway play when I was 13. She actually threatened to finish me off. She was the bitchiest person I ever saw.

The Razor's Edge (1946) contained my only great performance. When we shot that hospital scene in which "Sophie" loses her husband, child and everything else, I relived the death of my brother, whom I adored and who died at three. It gives me chills right now to think of it.

Personal Quotes by Greta Garbo

Here are some personal quotes by Greta:

There is no one who would have me...I can't cook.

Being a movie star, and this applies to all of them, means being looked at from every possible direction. You are never left at peace, you're just fair game.

You don't have to be married to have a good friend as your partner for life.

I wish I were supernaturally strong so I could put right everything that is wrong.

Life would be so wonderful if we only knew what to do with it.

Anyone who has a continuous smile on his face conceals a toughness that is almost frightening.

I never said, "I want to be alone".I only said, "I want to be left alone". There is a whole world of difference.

I don't want to be a silly temptress. I cannot see any sense in getting dressed up and doing nothing but tempting men in pictures.

The story of my life is about back entrances, side doors, secrets elevators and other ways of getting in and out of places so that people won't bother me.

On secrets: Every one of us lives his life just once; if we are honest, to live once is enough.

Personal Quotes by Teresa Wright

For the classic movie goddess of the month, I usually post some notable quotes by said actress. This month it's Teresa Wright and I found not too many personal quotes said by her. She seemed to be a very quiet and low keyed woman. Never drawing too many attention to herself, which is fine with me. I love that she wasn't making headlines or involved in something notorious or what have you. She dedicated herself to her craft and her family. I did find these two quotes by her though on IMDB, and they fit her to a 'T'.
Teresa with Greer in Mrs. Miniver (1942)

I only ever wanted to be an actress, not a star.

[on Greer Garson] Very bright. Fantastically beautiful. Very much the lady. She was a great Irish wit. There are actors who work in movies. And then there are movie stars. She was a movie star.

Personal Quotes by Jean Harlow

Here are some choice quotes by Jean, my classic movie goddess of the month:

I was not a born actress. No one knows it better than I. If I had any latent talent, I have had to work hard, listen carefully, do things over and over and then over again in order to bring it out.

Men like me because I don't wear a brassiere. Women like me because I don't look like a girl who would steal a husband. At least not for long.

[on Hell's Angels (1930)] "When I was making a personal appearance, I'd always sneak in the back of the house to watch the zeppelin airplane attack. I never failed to get a tremendous thrill out of it. I probably saw that scene hundreds of times."

Personal Quotes by Lauren Bacall

Here are some personal quotes by Lauren Bacall:

I was this flat-chested, big-footed, lanky thing.

I don't think being the only child of a single parent helped. I was always a little unsteady in my self-belief. Then there was the Jewish thing. I love being Jewish, I have no problem with it at all. But it did become like a scar, with all these people saying you don't look it.
I remember my oldest son, Steve, saying to me once, "I don't ever remember seeing you with an apron on". And I thought, "That's right, honey, you did not". That was his concept of what a mother should be.

Actors today go into TV, which I don't consider has a lot to do with acting. They only think of stardom. If you photograph well, that's enough. I have a terrible time distinguishing one from another. Girls wear their hair the same, and are much too anorexic-looking.

I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that.

On imagination: Imagination is the highest kite that can fly.

[upon receiving her Honorary Oscar] A man at last!

Personal Quotes by Audrey Hepburn

Here are some personal quotes by Audrey:

I never thought I'd land in pictures with a face like mine.

I was asked to act when I couldn't act. I was asked to sing "Funny Face" when I couldn't sing and dance with Fred Astaire when I couldn't dance - and do all kinds of things I wasn't prepared for. Then I tried like mad to cope with it.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it's at the end of your arm. As you get older, remember you have another hand: the first is to help yourself, the second is to help others.

I was born with an enormous need for affection, and a terrible need to give it.

My own life has been much more than a fairy tale. I've had my share of difficult moments, but whatever difficulties I've gone through, I've always gotten a prize at the end.

For me, the only things of interest are those linked to the heart.

I never think of myself as an icon. What is in other people's minds is not in my mind. I just do my thing.

I probably hold the distinction of being one movie star who, by all laws of logic, should never have made it. At each stage of my career, I lacked the experience.

My look is attainable. Women can look like Audrey Hepburn by flipping out their hair, buying the large sunglasses, and the little sleeveless dresses.

Success is like reaching an important birthday and finding you're exactly the same.

I know I have more sex appeal on the tip of my nose than many women in their entire bodies. It doesn't stand out a mile, but it's there.

Personal Quotes by Deborah Kerr

Here are some personal quotes from Deborah Kerr, my classic movie goddess for the month...

All the most successful people these seem to be neurotic. Perhaps we should stop being sorry for them and start being sorry for me - for being so confounded normal.

I came over here [Hollywood] to act, but it turned out all I had to do was to be high-minded, long suffering, white-gloved and decorative.

I was mad about ballet, but I grew too tall, and when I eventually realized I'd never become the second Margot Fonteyn, I auditioned for a play instead and got the part.

[about her work in From Here to Eternity (1953)] I don't think anyone knew I could act until I put on a bathing suit.

I'm almost hysterical at the thought of making people cry with joy 30-odd years after ]Cary Grant] and I did our stuff. I've certainly shed tears at An Affair to Remember (1957), even though I know all the tricks of movie magic that went into it. Believe me, Cary and I knew how to kiss. When we did a love scene, we may not have been trying to swallow each other but, for those brief moments, we just loved each other.

Classic Movie Goddess of the Month - Olivia de Havilland (Part 2) Personal Quotes

Here are some personal quotes by Olivia herself:

Famous people feel that they must perpetually be on the crest of the wave, not realising that it is against all the rules of life. You can't be on top all the time; it isn't natural.

Playing good girls in the '30s was difficult, when the fad was to play bad girls. Actually I think playing bad girls is a bore; I have always had more luck with good girl roles because they require more from an actress.

We were like a stock company at Warners. We didn't know any of the stars from the other studios.

[on the continuing appeal of Gone with the Wind (1939)] It will go on forever, and how thrilling that is. It has this universal life, this continuing life. Every nation has experienced war - and defeat and renaissance. So all people can identify with the characters. Not only that, it's terribly well constructed. Something happens every three minutes, and it keeps you on your toes and the edge of your seat, which is quite a feat, I must say.

[on Errol Flynn] I had a very big crush on Errol Flynn during "Captain Blood." I thought he was absolutely smashing for three solid years, but he never guessed. Then he had one on me but nothing came of it. I'm not going to regret that; it could have ruined my life.

[on Bette Davis] The great lesson I learned from Bette was her absolute dedication to getting everything just right. She used to spend hours studying the character she was going to play, then hours in make-up ensuring that her physical appearance was right for the part. I have always tried to put the same amount of work into everything I've done.

[on Clark Gable] Clark Gable was highly professional. He was a bigger star than we can create today. I was just a mini-star when we did "Gone With the Wind." I was afraid to talk to him. People can't understand it now, but we were in awe. Clark Gable didn't open supermarkets.

Clark was supposed to cry in the scene after the death of his daughter. It worried him for days before he was to do the scene. He never cried on the screen before, and it became an obsession with him. He didn't think it was masculine for a man to cry. One day he confided in me, "Olivia, I can't do it. I'm just going to have to quit." I talked with him and convinced him that the tears denoted strength of character, not weakness. It turned out to be one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. Clark always underrated himself as an actor. I think his Rhett Butler will live forever as one of the screen's classic performances.

Classic Movie Goddess Of The Month - Lee Remick

Here are some choice personal quotes by Lee:
I make movies for grownups. When Hollywood starts making them again, I'll start acting in them again.

Many times as an actress I feel crazy, yet the truth is that I would feel far more crazy if I were not an actress.

Breasts and bottoms look boringly alike.

He did inspire in me, as he did in most women I suppose, the feeling of wanting to look after him. He was like a wounded bird -- so vulnerable (on Montgomery Clift)
