Top Classic Stars for week of Jan 20th-26th, 2013

Carole enjoys her spot as the top classic star for the week

Big news here on All Good Things as my favorite actress Carole Lombard grabs the top ranking of the top classic stars for the week for her first time ever. My recent post about the upcoming Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney, in which she is one of four top seeds, yielded 60 views over that week period. Is this a good sign for her upcoming run in the tourney? I hope so. Deborah Kerr lands in second place with 37 views thanks to a post about my recent viewing of From Here To Eternity. It's Kerr's first appearance on the rankings this year. Rita Hayworth continues to make her presence known by placing third, and making her 4th straight week appearing here. My main man Cary Grant, who was number one last week falls to 4th place while Anne Francis debuts at number 5 with a post yielding 12 views. Those are the top five stars for  the week and be sure to check back next week for a new list.

1. CAROLE LOMBARD - 60 page views
2. DEBORAH KERR - 37 page views
3. RITA HAYWORTH - 24 page views
4. CARY GRANT - 21 page views
5. ANNE FRANCIS - 12 page views

The Morning Movie - FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953)

Watching some of this classic film on TCM this morning before heading out to work. Top notch film with a super cast. It takes place at Pearl Harbor, a few weeks before the attack by the Japanese. Montgomery Clift who plays Private Prewitt, arrives at the base and immediately draws the ire of the commander, who wants him to be on the boxing team. Clift refuses and his life at the barracks becomes a living hell. A truly emotional and epic film with a cast that features Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, and Frank Sinatra. All give Oscar caliber performances especially Reed as a floozie who Clift falls for. And Sinatra is perfect as Private Maggio.

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly..a short story

Just a short little story about Grace on my weekly series dedicated to her. Now it takes awhile to get to Grace but bear with me. It was many years ago when I was in the army and stationed in Germany. I was age 22 and it was my first time away from home. My girlfriend back home, Amy had broken up with me over the phone after I was away from her all of 6 months. So it took me awhile to start going out trying to meet new girls. And I did meet a few girls, some Americans and some Germans. But according to my fellow soldier and co-worker, Lisa, I had a problem which she gladly told me about. It went something like this, not word for word, but pretty much like this:

Let me set the scene first...I was outside the office looking out at the traffic on the streets of Germany, melancholy about my latest relationship problems. Sgt. Lisa Baker comes out...

Lisa: Hawes? what are you doing out here?
Me: Nothing..just thinking..
Lisa: what now?
Me: nothing..damn..just..Tanya hasn't called me in days
Lisa: who?
Me: Tanya..the girl I met a few weeks ago..went out a few times..
Lisa: damn Hawes..you know what your problem is?
Me: ummm..gee I didnt know I had a problem.
Lisa: well you do..wanna know what it is?
Me: yes..please tell me my problem Baker..
Lisa: You are too nice Hawes. You treat these girls you meet too special.
Me: What are you talking about?
Lisa: Every girl you meet, you treat them like Grace Kelly..you put them on a pedestal. And you just met them.
Me: I do not...you don't know what you're talking about.
Lisa: really Hawes...the one girl you met when we all went out a few months ago..
Me: you mean Gabbi?
Lisa: whatever her name was? Did you not buy her flowers the next day? Did you not want to introduce her to the entire unit saying she was your destiny?
Me: ummm..not to that extent.
Lisa: or how about Kathy? She gave you one little kiss and you was ready to marry her right then and there...
Me: OK, ok, ok...maybe I am a little prone to fall in love kinda quick but I do not treat girls like Grace Kelly. There is only one Grace Kelly.
Lisa: Wake up Hawes! This is not the movies!
Me: I know..I know..

Then I don't remember much after that but thought it would be cool to share on this Grace Kelly day!

Here are the rankings for my top classic stars for the week ending January 19th. My favorite actor of all time, Cary Grant lands in the top spot for the first time this year thanks to my birthday post about him on January 18th. Rita Hayworth moves up to the runner up spot with 49 hits of her summer pic. Elizabeth Taylor hangs in there at number three. My classic goddess of the month, Lucille Ball takes a drop from first to 4th place.Tuesday Weld re-enters the rankings after missing out last week in 5th place. And my favorite actress Carole Lombard moves up one spot to 6th. And Grace Kelly wraps things up with a 7th place finish. It was a pretty light week for me posting so I don't have ten stars to fill out the rankings. Hope to crank it up this week.

March Madness (Classic Movie Actress style) returns soon

March Madness is almost upon us with the 3rd annual Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney returning for another year. Once again 128 actresses from four era's (30's, 40's, 50's and 60's) will compete to determine the favorite actress of 2013. Three friends will help me put on this massive event once again: John from Mythical Monkey, Desiree from Rosalind Russell and Kristen from Journeys in Classic Film. I will be handling the 30's era right here on All Good Things. The tourney starts Sunday March 3rd and here are the top 4 seeds. Look for upcoming posts detailing the entire field and match-ups.

My guest for this month is my Tina Cosio, a friend I met on FB through the love of classic movies and film groups on Facebook. Let's get started and there is no number one question for Tina as she does not currently write a blog.

2.)  Who are your favorite classic film stars:

Tina: Gary Cooper, Joseph Cotten, Gregory Peck, Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable, Deborah Kerr, Marilyn Monroe, Jennifer Jones, Bette Davis, Ingrid Bergman, Natalie Wood

Me: We share some of the same favorites in Newman, Kerr, Monroe, Gable, Davis and Wood.

Tina:  Gone With The Wind, Dr. Zhivago, To Kill A Mockingbird, Rear Window, Casablanca, Now, Voyager, Song of Bernadette, The Searchers, Mrs. Miniver, Jezebel, Some Like It Hot, The Sundowners, Roman Holiday, Portrait of Jennie, Little Women

Me: Some big time classics there Tina..love Rear Window, The Searchers, Some Like It Hot, To Kill a Mockingbird and Mrs. Miniver.

4) My first classic movie experience was when I was a child. Every Sunday, my mom would take my brother and I to the movies. We would see classic Mexican movies with stars like Maria Felix, Pedro Infante, Sylvia Pinal, Libertad LaMarque

Me: Awesome Tina!

5)What films upon first viewing did you not like, then later on when re-watching them, loved them?

Tina: Casablanca, Roman Holiday

Me: I liked Casablanca the first time I saw it. Holiday not so much.

6) What's the perfect way to watch a classic film?

Tina: The perfect way for me to watch a classic film is on TV with a bowl of popcorn.

Me: I second that

7)  How many friends, family member or co-workers share your love of classic films?

Tina: Michael, my son, likes classic movies especially Italian classics.

Me: cool

8) Tina: My favorite time period is the 40's.

Not sure about this one Monty

11) Tina: Favorite genre: Musicals, Romance

Me: Ahhhh...music and romance..what a combination

12) If you threw a movie theme party, describe how you would do it. The costumes, decorations, food, etc.

Tina: If I were to throw a movie theme party I would have to pick The Great Gatsby. I would have the invitations hand delivered. My guests would be picked up in 1920's vintage cars. The party would be in Napa, CA. In a white outdoor tent with chandeliers. We would start with a reception with live entertainment before a sit down dinner. The waiters would be dressed in 1920's style clothing. The waitresses would be dressed as flappers. The menu would consist of comfort food. Nothing over the top just delicious. Followed by dessert. And lots of champagne of course!

Me: Count me in...

13) What are some films that are widely loved that you couldn't care less about?

Tina: Try as I might I do not care for silent films. Not any movie in particular all of them.

Me: I've only seen a handful of silents but I would like to see some more.

Happy Birthday Cary Grant (1904-1986)

Today marks Cary Grant's birthday. He is without a doubt my favorite actor of all time. And as I imagine, he is probably a lot of people's favorite actor. A perfect example of sophistication and charm. He was a master of screwball comedies, which is my favorite genre. He shines in such notable classics like Bringing Up Baby, The Awful Truth, Arsenic and Old Lace, His Girl Friday, My Favorite Wife and lots more. He also excelled in films for Hitchcock...To Catch A Thief, Notorious, Suspicion, and North By Northwest. He could do anything as he had excellent range. Drama, comedy, suspense, even military films like Destination Tokyo, and action yarns like Gunga Din. So looks like it will be a Cary Grant viewing weekend for me. Which suits me just fine. Happy Birthday Cary!

Facts and trivia about Lucille Ball

Here are some facts and trivia about my classic goddess of the month, provided by IMDB:

Red hair and blue eyes

Originally interred at Forest Lawn (Hollywood Hills), Los Angeles, California, USA, Columbarium of Radiant Dawn, Court of Remembrance. In 2003, she was re-interred in the Ball family plot in Lake View Cemetery, Jamestown, New York.

Was the first woman to own her own film studio as the head of Desilu Productions.
Was awarded 2 Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Motion Pictures at 6436 Hollywood Boulevard; and for Television at 6100 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

Died the morning of April 26, 1989, the fifty-sixth birthday of her friend Carol Burnett. That afternoon Burnett received the flowers that Ball had ordered for her birthday.
She was fired from working at an ice cream store because she kept forgetting to put bananas in banana splits.
TV Guide picked her as the greatest TV star of all time.
Was known for a while as Dianne Belmont back when she was a model.
Pictured on a 34¢ USA commemorative postage stamp in the Legends of Hollywood series, issued 6 August 2001.
Inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2002.

Her favorite movie she made was The Big Street (1942). Up to her dying day, she resented AMPAS for not recognizing her performance in the movie by including her for an Academy Award nomination.
Felt that she did not deserve the title of "Queen of Comedy" and felt that it belonged to her idol, Carole Lombard.
She was proud of her family and heritage. Her genealogy can be traced back to the earliest settlers in the colonies. One direct ancestor, William Sprague (1609-1675), left England on the ship "Lyon's Whelp" for Plymouth/Salem, Massachusetts. They were from Upwey, Dorsetshire, England. William, along with his 2 brothers, helped to found the city of Charlestown, Massachusetts. Other Sprague relatives became soldiers in the Revolutionary War and 2 of them became governors of the state of Rhode Island.
Her 1960 divorce from Desi Arnaz was quite amicable. They divided their $20 million television empire equally, each retaining 25% Desilu stock (282,800 shares), she got the homes in Beverly Hills and Rancho Mirage, and Desi got the beach house in Del Mar, California and his Horse Ranch in Corona, California. In addition, they agreed to joint custody of their children with him paying $450/month child support
Mother of Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.

Top Classic Stars for week of Jan 6th-12th

There some movers and shakers this past week on my top classic stars rankings. At the other end of the spectrum, last week's top star Natalie Wood fell all the way to spot number 10, due to lack of posting here on my blog. I did manage to post some pics of her on my Tumblr and FB page though. Liz Taylor moved up five spots thanks to 51 hits on her Unlucky Loves post. Cary Grant stayed in third place for the second week in a row. Newcomers to the list included Grace Kelly, a regular here on my blog, lands at number 5. Doris Day jumps in at number 6. Her frequent co-star Rock Hudson also made his debut here at number 8. And 60's British actress Shirley Anne Field (Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Alfie) makes her first appearance on the list at number 9 due to frequent postings on my tumblr page.

Shirley Anne Field makes her debut on my top classic stars for the week chart
