Classic Horror Movies: Day 9 (THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD - 1951)

'The Thing from Another World' - Poster

One of the first of the classic monster movies of the 50's was this suspenseful flick about an Arctic research team crossing paths with an alien who has crash-landed there. The monster is tall and huge (played by James Arness of future Gunsmoke fame) and has a thirst for blood. His initial encounter with the team results in their dogs tearing the alien's arm off. So now he is really pissed. Captain Hendry (played by Kenneth Tobey) and his men go all out to stop it. Scientist Dr. Carrington wants to reason with and try to save it. While the lone female at the station, Nikki Nicholson (played by the wonderful Margaret Sheridan) just wants to  kill it. Go Nikki! This film started a wave of similar themed monster on the loose flicks of the 50's that gave audiences some fright for their dollars. Later remade as the awesome 1982 John Carpenter film The Thing with Kurt Russell. And a prequel to that will hit theaters this month with one of my favorite scream queens, Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

  2. I don't think I was ever aware this was a Howard Hawks film, even though I definitely saw it at some point back in the foggy mists of time.

    Loving this series, btw!
