What was she thinking... Jean Harlow dated the notorious mobster Abner "Longy" Zwillman, who secured a two-picture deal for Harlow with Harry Cohn of Columbia Pictures by loaning Cohn $500,000 in cash. Cohn, was thought to have a number of ties to organized crime.
Mobster Abner "Longy" Zwillman, was one of the founding members of the nationwide crime syndicate known as "Murder Incorporated". He was called Longy, because of his 6 foot 2 inch height. In the beginning he tried to make a living working for the Prince Street cafe which was the headquarters of a third Ward political leader.
He later sold produce, with a rented horse and wagon. Unfortunately, his neighbors were too poor to buy from his wagon. He soon learned that selling lottery numbers to the rich housewives in the Clinton Hill area was much more profitable. He started his own numbers bank and began selling numbers exclusively, mainly through small neighborhood merchants.
Abner "Longy" Zwillman, also purchased Jean Harlow a expensive charm bracelet and a red Cadillac. |
Very interesting. I didn't know this. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteHi Monty! I read a little about Harlow and Zwillman recently. Apparently the platinum bracelet he gave her was hung with tiny objects, including a pig (to represent her eating habits) and a miniature man of the world (to represent Zwillman).
ReplyDeleteSarah.. Thank you for sharing the "fun facts".
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know which 2 movies Zwillman procured for Harlow? Thanks
ReplyDeleteMy wife lived in W. Orange & discovered him hanging in his basement!
ReplyDeleteThe platinum pig was a reminder of her tendency to gain weight, lol.
