Round 3 wrap-up

March Madness, Classic Movie Actress Style, continues to roll on after the completion of round 3. Here are the complete results in all four eras.

30's era:
Barbara Stanwyck defeated Jean Harlow 49-28
Elsa Lanchester defeated Madeleine Carroll 39-31
Myrna Loy defeated Shirley Temple 57-18
Jean Arthur defeated Margaret Sullavan 57-15

The lone upset occurred when Elsa Lanchester took down British Ladies top seed Madeleine Carroll, while the other three matches were blow-outs won easily by the favorites.

40's era:
Greer Garson defeated Olivia de Havilland 43-37

Rosalind Russell defeated Katharine Hepburn 46-37
Judy Garland defeated Esther Williams 45-39
Gene Tierney defeated Lauren Bacall 44-40

A pair of upsets took place in this era, with the biggest one being Greer Garson beating one of this top 4 overall tourney seeds, Olivia de Havilland. Olivia was one win away last year from going to the final four so she was heavily favored this year to achieve that feat and perhaps win the whole tourney. But the red hot Greer Garson notched her third straight win to deny Livvie. And what's more shocking is that entering this year's tourney, Greer had never won a single match in her four previous tries. Wow! And the other upset which is a mild one as no. 1 Katharine Hepburn lost to no. 2 Rosalind Russell in the box-office queens bracket, marking the furthest Roz has ever gone into a tourney!

50's era:
Debbie Reynolds defeated Judy Holliday 46-5
Eleanor Parker defeated Anne Baxter 30-21
Audrey Hepburn defeated Grace Kelly 34-24
Doris Day defeated Janet Leigh 30-26

Debbie Reynolds rolled over Judy Holliday while Doris Day had quite the close match with Janet Leigh that she was able to pull out. Meanwhile the Audrey/Grace rivarly is now even at 2-2 with Audrey taking care of Princess Grace. The two have battled 4 times in tourney history and are now even after Audrey has won the last two.

60's era:
Elizabeth Taylor defeated Claudia Cardinale 59-20
Shirley MacLaine defeated Anne Bancroft 45-32
Natalie Wood defeated Julie Andrews 104-35
Ann-Margret defeated Julie Newmar 44-27

Natalie Wood racked up 104 votes, the most by any actress in the tourney so far, as her fan base continues to show up in big numbers. If she wins her next match against Ann-Margret and Liz beats Shirley, then we will have a rematch from last year between the two legendary and iconic 60's actresses.  Oh boy!

So we are headed to the Sweet 16 round as these 16 actresses are still in the mix:
Barbara Stanwyck
Elsa Lanchester
Myrna Loy
Jean Arthur
Judy Garland
Greer Garson
Rosalind Russell
Gene Tierney
Doris Day
Audrey Hepburn
Eleanor Parker
Debbie Reynolds
Elizabeth Taylor
NatalieWood
Shirley MacLaine

Round 4 matches will begin tomorrow and run through next Saturday.
