New Tourney: Favorite Classic Romantic Films begins Friday, February 9th

Another month means another tourney. And for February the theme is classic romantic films. 14 films chosen by 14 friends will compete and voters get to decide on the absolute favorite. Scheduled to begin on Friday Feb 9th!

My Top Ten Favorite Modern Romantic Films

For my blog, I decided to list my favorite modern romantic films. So here we go.

10.) UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN (2003) While on vacation, a just-divorced writer buys a villa in Tuscany on a whim, hoping it will be the start of a change for the better in her life. Diane Lane gives a wonderful performance and the scenery is just gorgeous.

9.) WORKING GIRL (1988) When a secretary's idea is stolen by her boss, she seizes an opportunity to steal it back by pretending she has her boss's job. Melanie Griffith's biggest film and one of her best roles as Tess McGill, the secretary with a head for business and a bod for sin. Harrison Ford is terrific in a rare comedy role as is Sigourney Weaver. A crowd-pleasing film from the late 80's backed by the powerful Carly Simon song, Let The River Run, which won an Oscar.

8.) THE BEST MAN (1999) When friends from college gather for a wedding, lookout for drama and romance. A terrific cast led by Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Terrence Howard and others make for an entertaining romantic comedy/drama.



7.) 500 DAYS OF SUMMER (2008) An offbeat romantic comedy about a woman (the always engaging Zooey Deschanel) who doesn't believe true love exists, and the young man (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls for her. Offbeat romantic comedy that is one of the year's best propelled by the two lead's charming performances.

6.) THE HOLIDAY (2006) Great romantic film set at Christmas time about two women (Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz) who decide to switch homes for a few months to shake up their lives and hopefully meet Mr. Right. Winslet comes over to America while Diaz goes to England. Romantic mishaps occur before true love finally comes a calling. Solid support from Jude Law, Jack Black wily veteran Eli Wallach.

5.) WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989) Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan trade barbs as two life long friends who finally hook up. Hysterically funny and very romantic. Oh course, this is the film that features Meg Ryan showing Billy how women can fake orgasms and men nobe able to tell the difference. In a crowded restaraunt. The killer punch line comes from the lady sitting across the way saying "I'll have what she's having". Classic.

4.) MOONSTRUCK (1987) To this day, still Cher's best performance and all around film. Doesn't get any better than this. Surrounded by a great cast in Olympia Dukakis, John Mahoney, Danny Aiello and Nicolas Cage (when he was still a good actor). The story centers on the romantic trials of an Italian/American family that is funny and touching.

3.) THE PROPOSAL (2009) Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are awesome together in this new romantic comedy that has Bullock forced to marry Reynolds to prevent her from being deported. She is Canadian. Laugh a plenty.

2.) RETURN TO ME (2000) A very underrated romantic comedy-drama that focuses on widower David Duchovony trying to move on with his life and meeting free-spirited Minnie Driver. Co-starring Carroll O'Connor, Robert Loggia, James Belushi, and Bonnie Hunt, this is a very good film that you must see.

1.) LOVE ACTUALLY (2003) An all-star cast that shows love through different relationships. Starring Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Billy Bob Thornton, Bill Nighy and tons more. This is my favorite romantic movie and it also doubles as a great Christmas movie, since it's set during that time period. I watch it at least once a year.

Favorite Romantic Films - THE HOLIDAY (2006)

This being February, I decided to post about some of my favorite romantic films. I mean I dedicated the whole month of October to scary movies, and the least I could do is the same thing for romantic movies this month. And it will be a mixed bag of classic and modern films. Up first: The Holiday (2006)


Well done romantic comedy/drama that features all four leads in great form. Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz are women who are having men trouble and decide to switch homes over the Christmas holiday. Each will stay at each other houses to get away from their normal routine and away from their significant opposites. Kate comes to LA while Cameron goes to England. Jack Black and Jude Law play the new men who come into their lives. A very pleasing film with solid performances by all, especially Kate Winslet. It's a crime she hasn't won an Oscar yet but I predict she will have several by the time her career is done. Cameron is funny as usual and gorgeous. Jack Black gives a surprising engaging performance as the guy who falls for Winslet. And Jude Law who in past movies can be very annoying is actually pretty good here. And veteran Eli Wallach almost steals the movie as a writer from Hollywood's golden age who becomes friends with Winslet. You will laugh and cry and enjoy this wonderful movie.
