The Lombard Cup returns next month

I know it's been awhile since I have posted anything but I'm here to announce the 3rd annual Lombard Cup to take place next month. Beginning Sunday, November 2, Team Carole will face off against Team Veronica. Team Veronica is sponsored by Kristen of Journeys in Classic Film while I'm the sponsor of Team Carole. Veronica as in Veronica Lake and Carole as in Carole Lombard. The Lombard Cup is akin to golf's Ryder Cup where two teams engage in match play. For here, it will be classic movie stars competing in matches and voted on by you guys as to your favorite. Last year it was actresses which Team Carole was able to win. This year it's the men's turn. 21 actors per team and the format will be the same with 5 matches taking place the first three weeks, then the final 6 matches for week 4. The LOMBARD CUP final matches come to a close

Four of the final six matches turned into some really close ones, especially the Barbara Stanwyck/Susan Hayward match-up. Hayward ended up holding on for a one vote victory by the count of 36-35. It had been a back and forth match the entire week, with Susan finally prevailing. The second closest match was between Bette Davis and Vivien Leigh, with Davis storming back the past two days after trailing for most of the week, for a 36-34 victory. Deborah Kerr held off Janet Leigh 38-29. Audrey Hepburn withstood a late rally by Elizabeth Taylor to win 36-32. The other two matches were never really close with Ann Sheridan beating Ann-Margret 47-20 and the most lopsided match was Olivia de Havilland beating Joan Crawford by wide margin of 55-13. Team Carole picks up 5 more points for their five wins this week and finishes with 14 and a half points to Team Veronica's 6 and a half. And secures the Lombard Cup for one year. I would like to thank Kristen of Journeys in Classic Film for joining me in this annual event. We will be back next year featuring the top classic male stars. And I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for their favorite actresses to make this a great success.

The 2013 Lombard Cup Week 2 final results

The polls are closed and the five matches for week 2 of The Lombard Cup are now final. Team Carole ends up winning four of the five matches and tying in the fifth match. Doris Day and Maureen O'Hara ended up with 23 votes each, resulting in the first tie of the Lombard Cup. Unlike other match play events, there is no tie-breaker question to continue the match to seek a winner. Instead Team Carole gets a half point and Team Veronica gets a half point. Team Carole receives a total of 4 and a half points thanks to their four victories. Here are the complete results:

The Lombard Cup Week 2 Matches Update..things are getting closer

Things are tightening up in a few of the matches taking place in the 2013 Lombard Cup. Team Carole still leads in four of the five matches but Team Veronica has closed the gap in several of the matches.

Gene Tierney of Team Veronica has gained some votes and now trails Team Carole's Eleanor Parker by only 2 votes with the score of 17-15.

Jane Russell of Team Veronica has made a move in her match against Team Carole's Romy Schneider with the score now at 18-13 in favor of Romy.

Maureen O'Hara and Doris Day are engaged in a great match with O'Hara currently leading Day 17-13.

The two other matches are now looking like blow-outs. Judy Garland is beating Margaret O'Brien 25-6 and Irene Dunne is surprisingly beating Katharine Hepburn by a wide margin of 24-8. I expected that one to be much closer.

Voting continues through Friday evening so spread the word to vote on your favorites.

After one full day of voting here are the latest numbers on the five matches currently going on.

I am happy to report my girl Carole Lombard is winning by the count of 29 to 4 over Veronica Lake.

Rosalind Russell leads Cyd Charisse 25 to 8. That will make Desiree very, very happy!

Shirley Jones leads Jennifer Jones 19 to 14.

Jean Harlow is up on Marilyn Monroe by the score of 20 to 13.

And Rita Hayworth currently leads Greta Garbo 19 to 14.

THE 2013 LOMBARD CUP begins this Sunday

I stated a few weeks ago that me and Kristen of Journeys in Classic Film would be holding The 2013 Lombard Cup on our two respective blogs. Her team against my team. 21 classic film actresses per team that we selected with my team captain being Carole Lombard and hers being Veronica Lake. Akin to golf's Ryder Cup, we will have 21 single matches pitting actress against actress where you guys get to vote on who you like more. Each week we will have 5 matches with the final week having 6 matches. There will be no tie-breakers and if a match ends in a tie then both teams will get half a point. Whoever wins the match gets a full point. And at the end of the month whichever team has the most points wins The Lombard Cup and will keep it at their blog for a full year. Then we get to do it again the following year with new team members. Me and Kristen will trade hosting duties as the first five matches will begin over at her blog for week 1. Carole hopes to keep The Lombard Cup here at All Good Things

Since my last Lombard Cup went over so well last year I have embarked on a new edition for the 2013 cup. Last year it was competition between the classic and modern eras of actors. This time the event have matches between Team Carole (as in Carole Lombard) and Team Veronica (as in Veronica Lake). My friend Kristen of Journeys in Classic Film will be heading up Team Veronica while I of course will lead Team Carole. A few days ago we made our selections of actresses who made the cut. Here are the complete rosters for both teams. The Lombard Cup will begin Sunday, September 8th and have 5 matches per week and alternating between here at All Good Things and Kristen's blog Journey In Classic Films. The Lombard Cup begins next month

Combining my love of golf's match play and classic stars once again, I will have a new event beginning next month. Still working on the details but I can share some info. One..this won't be a regular tourney. More like match play, where it's individual matches instead of a mammoth type tournament. And two, it focuses on the men this time instead of the women. But it does have a featured theme. Oh and three it is named after my favorite actress ever, Carole Lombard. Kind of misleading since it will be all about actors, but hey that's me. I will have more details before the week is out. Stay tuned....

Joel McCrea defeats Robert Taylor 25-17 in match play

Robert Taylor made a valiant comeback after being down early in his match with Joel McCrea, but still came up short. McCrea defeated Taylor 25-17 to improve his match play record to 2-1, while Taylor drops to 0-2. There will be no match play this week as we get ready for the Favorite Classic Movie Actress tourney, which begins next week.

I know the favorite actress tournament will be kicking off in about 2 weeks but I still wanted to have at least one more match play. This time with the gents. Joel McCrea vs Robert Taylor. These guys both competed in last years actors tourney and the one thing they had in common: getting trounced by eventual champion Cary Grant. But Cary beat everyone so that's not a surprise. A new kind of match play....

Hello everyone! It's me Monty. I'm back with a new match play for this week. As I had mentioned earlier, what with the Favorite Classic Actress tournament coming up in March, I would being doing an alternative type of match play for the next two months. Instead of actors and actresses competing, for the time being it will be characters vs characters. Like in classic and beloved characters from TV and film. Some of you might know that I have an album of memorable characters on facebook. And that from time to time I post about said characters on my good friend Irene's wonderful blog, And Then They Start To Sparkle. So for the next 7 or 8 weeks, I will be presenting matchups between some of the greatest characters in film and TV. I will keep the film characters separate from TV characters. The Ooomph Girl handily took care of the It Girl by the score of 14-6. Ann Sheridan cruised to an easy victory to even her match play record to 1-1. While Clara Bow falls to 0-2. Don't worry Clara, I know you will get a win soon. You're the It Girl for crying out loud! Anyway as the favorite classic actress tournament nears I thought I might change up these next few matches. For the next match play, two very well known actresses, who each had popular nicknames, will battle for victory. Clara Bow, known as The "It" Girl will face Ann Sheridan, who was given the name The "Oomph" Girl. Both women also had some other common traits. Clara Bow's birth name was actually Clara. Danny Kaye edges past Jerry Lewis 10-8 in match play

This was one of the closest match plays yet. In fact this match was tied between Danny Kaye and Jerry Lewis 7-7 until the last two hours. Kaye's fans came through as he edged Lewis by 2 votes. Danny notches his first match play win and evens his record at 1-1. Lewis drops to 0-2 as he has yet to claim a win. Thanks to all those who voted and a new match will be up tomorrow.
