Classic Movie Actor Tournament (Silent/30's Era) Semi-Final Matches

What started out with 16 competitors has quickly been whittled down to 4. The two semi-final matches will kick immediately and run through Sunday evening at 8 PM EST. Top seed Clark Gable will face the rascally James Cagney (12th seed). While juggernaut William Powell (seeded 6th) will face 7th seed swashbuckler Errol Flynn. Both look to be thrilling matches.

The four quarterfinal matches are in the books and moving on to the semi-finals are Clark Gable, James Cagney, Errol Flynn and William Powell.

The only real nail biter was between Cagney and Astaire who battled back and forth the entire match with Cagney finally eking out a 3 point victory.Clark Gable had a little trouble early on with Buster Keaton before pulling away 33-18. Errol Flynn had to use his moxie to out-distance Chaplin 30-22. And William Powell continues to steamroll his opponents as he crushed Ronald Colman 41-11. You may remember in the opening round match, Powell beat the living daylights out of George Brent 38-2. So now onto the semi-final matches.

After a busy first round, we get the second round kicked off with some terrific matches. The matches will start immediately after I post this and set up the polls on the right sidebar. And will run until Friday 5pm. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to vote to get this actor tourney off to a flying start. And these four matches all look like barn burners.. Gable against Keaton (don't be surprised if Keaton pulls off an upset as he has quite the fanbase).  Cagney vs Astaire..oooh. Gangster/hoofer vs hoofer supreme. Charlie Chaplin against the swashbuckling Errol Flynn. And then William Powell vs Ronald Colman. All exciting matches. Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

Classic Movie Actor Tournament: Silent/30's Era Round 1 Results

The first round of the silent/30's era bracket of the Classic Movie Actor Tournament has concluded and they quite a bit of top seeded actors losing out. But first let's talk about the ones who cruised to victory like expected. Top seed Clark Cable thrashed Douglas Fairbanks Jr. 31-10. Second seeded Charlie Chaplin edged out 15th seeded Fredric March, 23-17. 7th seed Errol Flynn had little trouble with 10th seed Paul Muni, 33-7. And 6th seed William Powell blew out 11th seed George Brent, 38-2 in the round's most lopsided victory. Now onto the upsets. 9th seed Buster Keaton had a mild upset of 8th seed John Gilbert 28-10. 4th seed Douglas Fairbanks Sr got manhandled by 13th seed Fred Astaire 29-11. 5th seed Rudolph Valentino was ripped by 12th seed James Cagney 34-7. And 14th seed Ronald Colman outlasted 3rd seed John Barrymore 24-15. So the tournament is wide open now. Here are the full results:

And now comes the legendary union between Liz and Richard Burton, who she described as the greatest love of them all. Their romance and relationship is known by every man, woman and child. It was passionate one minute, then volatile the next. It was an epic relationship that has no peers. They met in 1962 on the set of Cleopatra and sparks flew immediately. It didn't matter that Liz was currently married to Eddie Fisher and Dick was married to his then wife, Sybil. Schematics. The couple's on-set affair became the affair of the century. After a year of this very public affair, both Liz and Dick got divorced from their spouses and within 2 weeks, were married. But it was anything but a rosy marriage. Between their drinking and his jealousy, things were always heated and explosive. The fact that their troubles spilled over into the news only fueled the fire. When they made the excellent film Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), which Liz picked up another Best Actress Oscar for, people wondered where did the movie end and their real life begin. Because the arguments they had on screen were very explosive and dramatic. Surprisingly their marriage was Liz's longest at 10 years. It may not have been pretty but these two stuck it out, far longer than anyone dreamed they would have. And remember after their divorce, they would try it again.

Happy Birthday Marilyn Monroe (1926 - 1962)

Happy Birthday to the blonde bombshell, Marilyn Monroe whose life was tragically cut short back in 1962 due to that fatal drug overdose. She did leave a legacy of great films including Some Like It Hot, The Seven Year Itch and How To Marry A Millionaire.
