Round 1 of the 50's Era has no surprises as most of the favorites win...

Round 1 of the 50's era for the favorite classic musical film tournament has just ended with no real major surprises. Top seed and heavy favorite Singin In The Rain just destroyed Silk Stockings 16-5. But believe it or not, that was not the biggest blow-out. That took place in the battle of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, as South Pacific just crushed The King and I, 16-2. The other Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma got edged out by Show Boat 11-9 in the round's closest match. One of the most surprising matches had to be 15th seed Carmen Jones hanging tough with 2nd seed An American In Paris before losing 12-7. 3rd seed White Christmas was all over Guys and Dolls 16-3. A mild upset occurred when 11th seed A Star is Born (hey its Judy again) beat 6th seed Royal Wedding 11-6. And one of my personal favorites, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes defeated Gigi 16-5.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Round 2 now begins tonight and will run thru Sunday 8pm EST. Here are the scheduled matches.

Shirley Jones in THE MUSIC MAN (1962)

Shirley gives one of her grandest performances ever as librarian Marion Paroo who matches wits with the fast talking traveling salesman Harold Hill (top notch performance by Robert Preston) as he lands in her town of River City. Of course Hill tries to sweet talk all the townfolk especially Marion. The Music Man is one of my favorite musical films of all time and gets two wonderful performances from Preston and Jones. In fact Shirley matches Preston tit for tat. She is beautiful to look at and more than holds her own in the various entertaining musical numbers.

Film: B+

The Morning Movie: SUPERDAD (1974)

Watching the Disney flick Superdad. The type of live-action family film Disney churned out during the 60's and 80's. Starring Bob Crane (Hogan's Heroes) as the titular character. Not too bad. Co-starring the wonderful Barbara Rush (Peyton Place tv series). But you want to know what's cool...is seeing future stars in an early role. There's Kurt Russell and Bruno Kirby. And then I saw Nicholas Hammond. Most die hard comic book fans remember him as Peter Parker/Spider-Man from the late 70's tv series Spider-Man. So I had a wonderful trip back down memory lane this morning.

THE FALL SERIES: Tyrone Power

Tyrone Power looking dapper..

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS beats EASTER PARADE by one vote to land a spot in the final four....

Judy just can't wait to spread the news about Meet Me In St. Louis winning a trip to the Final Four

I doubt Judy Garland would complain but sentimental favorite Meet Me In St. Louis beat Easter Parade 12-11 to take the second spot in the final four of the favorite classic musical film tournament. It was back and forth for the entire match as Parade jumped out to an early lead, then St. Louis came back to tie and then pull ahead by 3 votes. Easter Parade made a strong rally that fell just one vote shy. Regardless, we have our second film set for the finals and now must wait on the 50's and 60's eras to play out. Congrats to all the fans of Meet Me In St. Louis who voted for that film to win. Side note: Meet Me in St. Louis also prevented Fred Astaire from placing his second film in the final four. Swing Time won the 30's era last week and had Easter Parade won, they would have been going to the dance together. Oh well. By the way, here's the link to go vote on the 50's era matches which began today: http://chickflicksmusicals.blogspot.com/

Top Ten Stars For The Week Ending Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Here is my own little list of the top stars for the week. These top ranked actors and actresses are the ones I posted about the most or watched some of their movies during the week. Basically the ones that were on my mind for the majority of the week. You may be surprised by a few of them that made the list. I will try and rank them every week, if not then at least once a month. Here we go:
Joan Blondell
1. JOAN BLONDELL - I was crushing on Joan a lot for the past few weeks as most of my readers can attest. As I posted tons of her pics on here and FB. Believe it or not she was the most posted actress during my at the beach series, ahead of such goddesses like Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth. Way to go Joan!
Elmer Gantry
2. SHIRLEY JONES - Is my classic goddess for the month and I have had a great time posting about her. Thanks to her I tweaked my format a little and I think it works fabulous. So thanks Shirley.
Judy Garland
3. JUDY GARLAND - Thanks to the musical tournament I'm doing for Dawn over at her blog, Singin' and Dancing Back In Time, Judy was discussed quite a bit over there and here on All Good Things. All of her four films made it to the semi-final matches of the 40's era. How impressive is that.
Lauren Bacall
4. LAUREN BACALL - Lauren just had a recent birthday which I almost missed. Well I did miss it by one day but made up for it with a nice birthday tribute post. Won't happen again Lauren.
Greta Garbo in As you desire Me(1932)
5. GRETA GARBO - Another recent birthday girl was Greta and I did not miss hers. I celebrated it with a viewing of Ninotchka and a little birthday tribute as well.
Humphrey Bogart
6. HUMPHREY BOGART - Watched a couple of his films recently including They Drive By Night and The Maltese Falcon. That's good enough for Bogie to land here on this list.
Only Angels Have Wings
7. CARY GRANT - You know my man was going be here, just on principal. Didn't talk too much about him this past week but his name came up in other places. There is just no getting around Cary Grant people.
Ginger Rogers
8. GINGER ROGERS - Watched a few of her films including The Major and The Minor which is a hilarious movie. And of course her film Swing Time nabbed the first spot in the final four of the musical tournament. Congrats Ginger.
Peter Lorre
9. PETER LORRE - Peter picked up a Montie for Best Supporting Actor in The Maltese Falcon which I just recently watched. So he was in the conversation a little this week.
Vera-Ellen
10. VERA-ELLEN - Saw her movie Let's Be Happy one morning before work and her dancing sequence in her pajamas had me dancing along right with her.

So there you go, the top 10 stars of All Good Things for this past week. Like I said I hope to make this a weekly series.
