The 7th Annual Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney returns Sunday, March 5th

It's almost that time of year..March Madness, Classic Movie Actress Style, as my 7th annual tournament returns on Sunday March 5th. A field of 64 classic movie actresses, broken down into 4 eras: the 30's, the 40's, the 50's and the 60's will compete in matches voted on by followers to determine the champion actress of 2017. Based on last year finishes, the top 4 seeds are:

Myrna Loy- 30s era
Rosalind Russell- 40s era
Deborah kerr- 50s era
Shirley MacLaine- 60s era

Me and my good friend John of Mythical Monkey will be hosting this year's tourney. I'll have the complete field of actresses competing in my next post. Gonna be fun..can't wait.

We have now made it to round 5 of the 2015 Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney, aka The Elite Eight. This round will decide which of the eight actresses will move on to the final four. HIS GIRL FRIDAY wins the favorite screwball film tourney...which makes me very happy

Take a look Hildy...we won..no kidding!

The Favorite Screwball Film tourney came to an end yesterday and my favorite film of all time, His Girl Friday won it all. As a number two seed, Friday had to overcome a slew of top films including three number one seeds in It Happened One Night, My Man Godfrey and Bringing Up Baby. Now call me crazy but that is just impressive as all get out. Friday edged out Baby by the count of 16-13, so it was close but nevertheless a victory for the fastest talking comedy ever filmed. And my personal favorite to boot. So I am quite content today. I would like to thank all those that voted to make this tourney a huge success. By the way, the 2013 Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney gets underway March 3rd!

It will be Cary Grant vs. Cary Grant for favorite Screwball film

The two semi-final matches were very close but in the end, two Cary Grant films edged out two William Powell films to set up an all Cary Grant final match in the favorite screwball film tourney. Overall top seed Bringing Up Baby beat The Thin Man 13-10 while 2nd seed His Girl Friday slid by the other top seed My Man Godfrey 12-9. It is great news for me as Friday and Baby are my number 1 and 2 favorite films of all time. So when the final match begins and whoever wins, I will be good with either outcome. But I will be pulling for Friday just slightly. The match begins right now and will run through Sunday evening. Then I can declare the winner of All Good Things Favorite Screwball Film.

Round Four features a pair of dream semi-final matches

The Favorite Screwball Film tourney heads into round four with a pair of dream semi-final matches. Both matches pits a number one seed against a number two seed. In the first match, overall top seed Bringing Up Baby squares off against second seed The Thin Man. The second match will feature number one seed My Man Godrey against second seed His Girl Friday. So we have a pair of Cary Grant films still in contention as well as one film with Carole Lombard. My top two favorite stars of all time. William Powell is also represented with two films himself. The matches begin this morning and run through Monday evening. Good luck to these four excellent films making it to the final four. And I would have no problem with any one of these films winning the tourney. But I am secretly pulling for His Girl Friday.

Favorite Screwball Film Tourney: Day 4 Update

Three of the eight matches are so close that you couldn't shine a light between them. The other five matches are starting to separate the leaders from their competitors. My Man Godfrey leads The Awful Truth 23-19. The Lady Eve leads My Favorite Wife 21-19. And the closest match is going on between You Can't Take It With You and Ball Of Fire, with Fire currently holding a 1 point advantage of 20-19. The other matches are getting close to being over. Overall top seed Bringing up Baby is beating Midnight 30-10. The Thin Man is up 25-14 over The Palm Beach Story. To Be Or Not To Be is winning over Theodora Goes Wild 28-9. His Girl Friday has expanded a sizable lead over The Philadelphia Story 30-15. And It Happened One Night is crushing Merrily We Live 41-0. Yep, Live has still yet to earn a single vote. Matches continue on through Friday evening.

Hall of Fame new inductees for the month: Ginger Rogers and Rosalind Russell

A new month brings two more inductees for my Hall of Fame. Two more wonderful women. Ginger Rogers and Rosalind Russell.

Ginger earns his way into All Good Things Hall Of Fame thanks to her complete annihilation of other actresses in this year's Favorite Classic Actress tourney. I mean she crushed her competitors with some very lop-sided victories. Even took down my girl Carole Lombard. She joins first tourney winner Irene Dunne in that regard of inductees entering the hall of fame.

Rosalind Russell gets in thanks to her recent Montie win for Best Actress of 1940. Her memorable turn as reporter Hildy Burns is one for the ages. It's my favorite movie of all time and it's my favorite performance of hers.

So that brings the total to eight people currently in the Hall of Fame. Be back next month with two more additions.

I'm back to preview the 1940's era for the upcoming favorite classic actress tournament. Now my good friend Desiree will be handling this era and she has set up some wonderful matches for the opening round. CMBA Comedy Classics Blogathon: His Girl Friday (1940)

I saw it for the first time when I was 12 years old and it immediately struck me as the best movie I had seen in my young life at the time. It would keep with me over the years and stay as my favorite movie, withstanding the new releases with all their hi tech fancy stuff like the Star Wars movies, Indiana Jones, and others. For me, there is nothing better than His Girl Friday and watching Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell play off each other.

Cary Grant is never better as newspaper editor Walter Burns, who is about to lose his ace reporter and ex-wife Hildy Johnson (a superb performance by Rosalind Russell) to marriage to an insurance man (Ralph Bellamy). Just so happens a major news story breaks as convicted murderer Earl Williams, who is about to be put to death, escapes from custody. Walter convinces Hildy to take this last job assignment and he will sign a nice big check for an insurance policy for the soon to be wed couple. During her investigation, Hildy manages to track down Williams and tries to keep him safe from the police and the mayor. A wonderful mix of comedy and some drama make this my all time favorite film. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell make a terrific dream team. The one liners fly fast and furious, expertly handled by the entire cast. Great direction by the legendary Howard Hawks.

You couldn't ask for a better screwball film. I have probably seen His Girl Friday like 40 some times and it is still fresh and funny the 40th time as it was the first time. One of the films that even if you own it, you will stop whatever you doing to watch it when it airs on TV. I know I do. Turn off my cell phone, don't want to be disturbed by anyone or anything. It's that great of a film.

A sampling of the fast paced dialogue that has amazed me for all these many years:



Walter Burns: Sorta wish you hadn't done that, Hildy.
Hildy Johnson: Done what?
Walter Burns: Divorced me. Makes a fella lose all faith in himself. Gives him a... almost gives him a feeling he wasn't wanted.
Hildy Johnson: Oh, now look, junior... that's what divorces are FOR!

Wilson, reporter: Any dope on how he escaped?
McCue, reporter: Maybe the sheriff let him out so Williams could vote for him.

Hildy Johnson: [speaking to Walter on the phone] Now, get this, you double-crossing chimpanzee: There ain't going to be any interview and there ain't going to be any story. And that certified check of yours is leaving with me in twenty minutes. I wouldn't cover the burning of Rome for you if they were just lighting it up. If I ever lay my two eyes on you again, I'm gonna walk right up to you and hammer on that monkeyed skull of yours 'til it rings like a Chinese gong!

Louis: What's the matter, Hildy?
Hildy Johnson: Don't give me that innocent stuff! What did you pull on Mr. Baldwin THIS time?
Louis: Who, me?
Hildy Johnson: Yes, you and that albino of yours!
Louis: You talkin' about Evangeline?
Hildy Johnson: None other
Louis: She ain't no albino.
Hildy Johnson: She'll do 'till one comes along!
Louis: She was born right here in this country!

So to wrap this blog up let me just say that His Girl Friday is THE movie for me. Cary Grant's other classic movie, Bringing Up Baby is a close second, but His Girl Friday holds that special place in my heart. To all classic movie lovers out there, if by some small chance you have never seen this movie, take time to watch it somewhere, somehow and I promise you will not regret it.

Monty: What is your favorite classic movie series?
Clara: "The thin man" by far.
Monty: That would be mine as well..as is several of my guests who have come on here.

Clara: Difficult question. I can barely identify with them, most of them are too damn cool, even if their circumstances are rough. I guess that's why I don't tend to identify with the characters I like, I tend to wish I was more like them. Examples: I'd like to have Hildy Johnson's personality, Nora Charles' humor, Mary Kate Danaher's will, "Ellie" Andrews fun sexiness, Regi Allen's commitment with her work, "I remember Mama"'s Mama ability to face problems, Melanie Wilkes' kindness, etc.

Be My Guest - Desiree (Part 3)

Welcome back to Be My Guest with Desiree for the final set of questions. I want to thank Desiree for being my guest for this month as I think we all enjoyed her being here. Let's get to it...

Monty: What is your favorite classic film series?
Desiree: My favorite movie series by far is The Thin Man series. It’s absolutely perfect and hilarious and suspenseful in every single film. I think it is a brilliant series and without it, I would never come to adore William Powell and Myrna Loy as much as I do, since they are forever my favorite onscreen couple. The dialogue is absolutely delicious and it’s a joy all the way through.

Monty: The Thin Man has been the choice for most of my guests including myself. You just can't go wrong with Nick and Nora..and Asta.

Monty: What's your favorite genre?
Desiree: My favorite movie genre has always been comedy. 99 times out of 100, I will want to laugh and not cry. Laughing gets me through hard times and laughing makes me feel so good about life and everything around me. Being happy is the best feeling in the world and laughing at hilarious comedies is one way to make me very happy.
Monty: I can't argue with that choice. I love comedies, especially screwball comedies.

Monty: What classic stars would you have love to met in person?

Desiree: First and foremost, I would have loved to meet Rosalind Russell. She is my favorite actress and a real inspiration to me. She seems to down-to-earth and witty, and would probably be a delight to meet and chat with. I know she was a very talkative, enthusiastic person and I would have loved to meet her and get her autograph. Besides Roz, I would have loved to meet Melvyn Douglas, James Stewart, Myrna Loy, Joan Blondell, Irene Dunne, and William Powell. These are stars that I admire and idolize a great deal and whom do not seem as intimidating to meet.
Monty: All great choices Desiree..I would have imagined Roz would have been awesome to meet.

Monty: And finally, what is your favorite movie character? the one you can identify with the most?
Desiree: This is by far the most difficult question for me, and it took a lot of thinking on my part. My favorite movie character of all time is Mame Dennis from Auntie Mame. I think she is too perfect for words—hilarious, strong-willed, kind, unconventional, but also with some delightful flaws like her naiveté at times. I would love to be like Auntie Mame, but I know I am not. My mom would like to say that I identify the most with Barbara Stanwyck's "Listen Sistah" character in "Ladies They Talk About" but that's just an inside joke. I think the character I identify with the most is Nora Charles from the Thin Man movies. The reason for this is because she is so likeable to me—such a down-to-earth (a quality I really like), strong woman, and funny and kind as well. The banter between her and William Powell is just the best and I know I’d like to have a relationship like that someday.  To me, Nora Charles couldn’t possibly be a more likeable or admirable character and I’m sure all women can relate to her as well, even if they are not as witty or as wealthy as her.
Monty: Nora Charles...I can see that. Very cool. And once again thank you Desiree for being my guest

Be My Guest - Desiree (Part 2)

We continue on with our interview with our girl from California, Desiree...

Monty: Desiree, what is your favorite decade for film?

Desiree: This is a tough question for me because I love all decades, but I have a particular love for the 1930s and 1940s. However, I can’t choose between the two. It is just impossible. There are so many good films and stars from both decades and I love them both equally.

Monty: Hey I had a hard time deciding between them two decades as well. But finally decided on the 30's mainly because of my  love for screwball comedies.

Monty: Name some of your favorite modern stars.

Desiree: For modern stars, I admire some of the really talented ones, such as Robert de Niro, Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Mark Wahlberg… and I also love a few because I think they’re adorable or funny, such as Jake Gyllenhaal, George Clooney and Anne Hathaway.

Monty: Yes to Kate Winslet and Meryl Streep for me as well.

Monty: Name some of your favorite modern films

Desiree:  This is such a tough question for me… I am trying to think of modern films that I have seen many times and think are worth many viewings, such as the Meet the Parents movies, There’s Something about Mary, Clueless, Schindler’s List, The Devil Wears Prada, The Outsiders, Edward Scissorhands, The Hangover, Grease, Julie & Julia, Mean Girls, Orphan (seems like a strange choice, but there is something about that movie…), Juno, and films such as Precious and An American Crime, which affected me so deeply that I could not watch them again, but were truly great films.

Monty: I love The Hangover, There's Something About Mary, The Outsiders and Edward Scissorhands as well.


Monty: What are some of your favorite movie quotes?
Desiree: I have so many favorite movie quotes, but here are some that come to mind that I have repeated so many times over the years:

Be My Guest - Desiree (Part 1)

Desiree has graciously accepted to be my guest for this month so let's get started with part one of her questions shall we...

1. Name at least 10 of your favorite classic stars. Can be as many as you want, but at least 10.


Desiree: ha I have so many favorite classic movie stars, Monty… Well, I don’t want to clutter your blog with so many names, so I’ll list my top 10 favorite actresses and top 5 favorite actors because I relate more to actresses. My absolute favorite actress is Rosalind Russell, followed by Irene Dunne, Myrna Loy, Susan Hayward, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor, Olivia de Havilland, and Norma Shearer. Also, Barbra Streisand, whom I admire very much as a an actress, but who is of a slightly different era from the rest of the ladies on this list. There are quite a few more, but as I said before, no clutter. My five favorite actors are Cary Grant, Paul Newman, Melvyn Douglas, William Powell, and Robert Montgomery.

Monty: Roz being your favorite is awesome. And then you have Cary, Irene, Myrna and lots of my favorites as well.

Desiree: It’s hard to say which are my 10 favorites… I have seen so many movies and like a lot of them so much. I am not that picky when it comes to classic movies, so this is difficult. I love all of Rosalind Russell’s movies, so of course, my first favorites are Auntie Mame, Gypsy, His Girl Friday, and the Women... Some other favorites that I’ve seen probably 50 times over are Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, The Awful Truth, I’ll Cry Tomorrow, I Want to Live!, I Remember Mama, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Snake Pit, Cool Hand Luke, After the Thin Man, Funny Girl (I figure this counts since it was made in the 60s). Actually, the list just goes on and on and I am sure I am leaving out some.

Monty: Since Roz is your favorite I knew His Girl Friday had to be on your list. Cool. Love seeing Cool Hand Luke, The Snake Pit, Virginia Woolf, The Awful Truth, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof among others making your list.
3. Describe your first classic movie experience. Like where did you watch it..with who, what film was it, etc...


 Desiree: The first time I remember watching a classic movie was probably when I watched Pygmalion with Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller with my mom. It was many years ago and I wasn’t even in high school yet, I think. I remember that I loved the movie and it’s still one of my mom’s favorite films. It was probably one of the first DVDs we owned, along with Gone with the Wind. I loved the atmosphere of this film and the way the girl was transformed by this man in the movie, even though I remember really loving the Cockney accent. And most importantly, I loved the look of the film—the black and white and the way the actors talked and dressed. It was a magical experience for me.

Monty: That does sound like a magical experience Desiree.

4. Describe your perfect way to watch a movie.

Desiree: To me, the most perfect way to watch a movie is with a friend or family member who wants to watch it. It’s so fun because you can comment on little things every now and then and smile about it—not something you can do in the movie theater because people would shush you. It’s more comfortable to watch a movie at home and I like that. And if I’m alone watching a movie… well, people will think this is crazy, but I prefer watching a movie in the morning the most. There is something cozy about it to me, I guess, and I am less tired in the morning than at night.

Mr. Grant picks up his second Montie for his wonderful turn as the scheming and manipulative newspaper editor Walter Burns in His Girl Friday. This is one of my favorite performances by Cary as he is just phenomenal. Sorry Jimmy.

Rosalind Russell easily matched Cary tit for tat in His Girl Friday with her amazing performance as ace reporter Hildy Johnson. But this race was really close as I thought Leigh was outstanding with her follow-up to Gone with The Wind in Waterloo Bridge and a really good turn by Joan Fontaine in Rebecca. Sorry girls, but Roz gets this Montie. Her second consecutive I might add. Go Roz!

The sly and urbane George Sanders was very good in the film Rebecca. A foreshadowing of his other great future performance in All About Eve. Maybe he will pick up his second Montie for that performance as well. We shall see.

While Jane Darwell gave a powerful performance in The Grapes of Wrath, I went with Judith Anderson's truly wicked performance as the sinister Mrs. Danvers. Everytime I see this film, she just creeps me out.

So for the fifth year in a row, a comedy takes home the top prize as His Girl Friday just rolls over the competition and goes home with 4 Monties total. Rebecca grabs the other two awards in the supporting categories.
