Lombard Cup Week Three Matches (Breakdowns)

Team Modern is down by 7 full points after two weeks to Team Classic. They need to win a lot of matches...quickly to get back in it. Let's see what will happen this week.

Match 11: Gary Cooper vs Gary Oldman
The battle of the Garys. Coop takes on the very popular Gary Oldman. Gary Cooper is one of those larger than life film stars of the golden era...loved by many. Oldman has a huge fanbase as well and has been in some of the biggest films of all time. Can you say Dark Knight and Harry Potter. I have recently became a fan of Cooper but I am leaning toward Oldman for this match. Please don't hate me Patti! I do think Coop will win this match though.

Match 12: Jack Lemmon vs Leonardo DiCaprio
Everyone loves Jack Lemmon..and I do mean everyone. I'm a big fan of him and Leo as well. But the edge has to go to Jack for this one. I mean, come on, we're talking Jack Lemmon here people. Sorry Leo.

Match 13: Kirk Douglas vs Christopher Walken
The powerful on screen persona of Kirk Douglas goes head to head against the hyper and quirky Walken. I like Kirk in the majority of films he has done but I love Walken. I'm taking Chris for the upset in this one.

Match 14: William Holden vs Robert DeNiro
Now we get to the marquee match of this week. Golden Boy William Holden against Robert "Bobby" DeNiro. A dream match up to say the least. Holden is my 2nd favorite actor of all time, behind only Cary Grant. DeNiro is one of my top ten favorite modern actors. Kind of a close call for me but in the end I will go with Holden. I can hear Patti cheering loudly in the background.











Match 15: William Powell vs Samuel L. Jackson
The debonair Powell vs the volatile Jackson. One of the most unpredictable matches so far. Jackson is known for his fiery brand of acting while Powell is smooth and charming. I love both guys and I will have to think on this one.

 This month my guest is Patti, who I met last year when I started following her wonderful blog, They Don't Make 'Em Like They Use To and we immediately became good friends. I couldn't wait for her to make an appearance here on my blog.So let's get started shall we...

1. What made you start blogging?

 Patti:I actually started blogging back in early 2006, simply because I love to write.  (I've been doing freelance writing for years.)   As for my classic movie blog, I only started that last February.  I wanted to combine my love of writing and my love of classic films.  Given my passion for all those great films, I wanted to inspire others to discover their beauty by sharing snippets of movies I've seen. 

Me: Cool Patti. I for one love your blog immensely!

 

2. Who are your favorite classic film stars? Name as many as you want

 Patti: William Holden and Robert Ryan are my absolute faves.  I am totally in love with those 2 guys!  Only slightly behind them is my other "beloved," Gary Cooper.   After those top 3, in about this order, are Montgomery Clift, Cary Grant, James Cagney, Robert Taylor, Dana Andrews, Fredric March, Tyrone Power, Ray Milland, John Garfield, Sidney Poitier, and Clark Gable.  An up and coming guy is Van Heflin.  Gal-wise, it's Bette Davis as my #1.  I adore Bette.  After her, in about this order, are Susan Hayward, Barbara Stanwyck, Eleanor Parker, Myrna Loy, Lana Turner, Grace Kelly, Judy Holliday, Ida Lupino, Audrey Hepburn, Gene Tierney, and Greer Garson and Claudette Colbert.

3. What are some of your favorite films?

 Patti: All-time favorite movie is Now, Voyager.

4. Describe your first classic movie experience. Like where and when..at a cinema, on TV, etc..

Patti: Not counting "The Sound of Music," which I grew up with and always adored, my first classic movie experience was negative (#5 below), so I will share my first positive experience.  It was in late 2003, and I was visiting an out of town friend and her family.  She planned a "chick flick" night for her and I one night, and her movie of choice was "Roman Holiday."  I had no idea what to expect---a black and white movie?  With stars I didn't know?  With very low expectations, I settled in to watch.  To my surprise, I was hooked within minutes.  I loved every minute of that movie, and it set me on the course of looking for more Audrey Hepburn films...which led to "Sabrina"...which led to my discovery of and love for William Holden.  Also, everyone had always talked about "It's a Wonderful Life" as a fabulous Christmas movie, so also in 2003, we got that, loved it, and decided to look for other Frank Capra films....which led to "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" and my love affair with Gary Cooper.

Me: That's a great story Patti because another guest of mine got hooked on Roman Holiday as her first classic movie too.

 

5. What films upon first viewing did you not like, then later on when re-watching them, loved them?

  
Patti: " Casablanca "...I saw this way back when I was about 19, and I HATED it.  Hated the whole movie and especially hated the ending.  What's so funny is that not only do I now like that movie, I LOVE it...it's  my 2nd favorite film of all-time.  Plus, I LOVE the ending.  I think it's the right ending.

Me: I see...I  kinda didn't like Casablanca much the first time I saw it too..but it then grew on me.

 

6. Describe the perfect way for you to watch a classic film.

Patti: I actually prefer to watch alone...snuggled up on the couch with a pot of tea and my adorable little beagle, Ginger.  I enjoy watching alone because then I can ooh and aah, swoon, and giggle over my beloveds as much as I want!  I still do that when watching with the family, but I try to be a bit  more restrained with them.  Alone, though, I can swoon to my heart's content, plus I can rewind and watch scenes over again if I need (or want) to.

Me: That sounds wonderful Patti!

 

7. How many friends, family member or co-workers share your love of classic films?

 Patti: My daughter loves a lot of classic films, but she isn't as passionate about them as I am.  (And she has zero tolerance for my beloved Gary Cooper!!)  The only friends I have who love classic films as much as I do are those I have met online through blogging and Facebook.  We email back and forth.  Other than that, NO ONE in my life really gives a hoot about these beautiful old films.

Me: I see..well at least you have friends thru blogging and facebook to chat with about classic movies and stars.

 

8. What is your favorite time period: the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's or 60's?

Patti: I have favorite movies from each of those decades except for the 20's, with the 30's, 40's, and 50's about even with the number of favorite films.  But if I had to choose a favorite decade, it would be the 40's.  I love any and all things about that era.  I wish I had lived during that time.  (I'm pretty sure I was born 50 years too late!)

Me: The 30's are my fave era, but I love the 40's too. Great decade of films.

 

9. What are some of your favorite film quotes?

 

Patti: My absolute favorite film quote is an awesome line which explains how people of that generation made their marriages last.  It's from The Best Years of Our Lives and is spoken by Myrna Loy to Fredric March.  "We never had any trouble?  Now many times have I told you I hated you and believed it in my heart?  How many times have you said you were sick and tired of me, that we were all washed up?  How many times have we had to fall in love all over again?"

 

Other lines I love:

 

 From Now, Voyager:  "Don't let's ask for the moon; we have the stars."

 

From Born Yesterday:  "Look it up."

 

From Casablanca :  "We'll always have Paris ."

Me: Great quotes Patti, especially the one from The Best Years of Our Lives. One of my favorite films of all time.

 

 

10. What classic films have you yet to see for one reason or another?

Patti: Since I've only been heavy into classic films since late 2006, there are plenty of classic films I haven't yet had time to see.  There are also some which I have no real interest in seeing...Westerns especially, like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Stagecoach, She Wore a Yellow  Ribbon, Rio Bravo , etc. (I have a low tolerance for Westerns.)

 

Some other "famous" films I've never seen:  Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Psycho, Rope, The Quiet Man 

Me: You have to see The Quiet Man..it's an amazing film. I don't care too much for Citizen Kane though. Psycho is really good. Never seen Rope.

11. What is your favorite genre?

Patti: Drama!!!   I like romantic dramas the best, but I also enjoy family sagas, crime dramas, and film noir.  I will pretty much choose a drama over a comedy 80% of the time.

Me: I knew you were a drama gal...

 

12. If you threw a movie theme party, describe how you would do it. The costumes, decorations, food, etc.

 Patti: I am into dressing up...women in cocktail dresses and men in suits and ties.  (It boggles my mind why people threw aside that kind of classy attire.)

So my party would be a dress-up cocktail party, with waiters meandering around with trays of hors d'oeuvres and glasses of wine, a pianist lightly playing easy listening tunes in the background.  I would use the "good" china, silver, and crystal just for the elegance of it.

13. What are some films that are widely loved that you couldn't care less about?

Patti: Well you will get a kick out of this, because I happen to know that you really like many of the films which have no appeal to me..."Rear Window,"  "Bringing up Baby,"  "His Girl Friday," "The Awful Truth," "The Maltese Falcon," "The Big Sleep," "The African Queen,"  "The Thin Man" series.  I am quite sure I am about the only classic movie lover on the planet who is not into these movies.

Me: Yeah I know you mentioned these before..but that's cool Patti. We all can't agree on everything.

 

14. Who’s the biggest film fanatic that you know? Besides yourself of course.

Patti: Probably you and the other classic movie bloggers.

15. And finally who are some of your favorite film characters?

Some I like because of their integrity and goodness (3 are Gary Cooper roles):   Will Kane (High Noon), Longfellow Deeds (Mr. Deeds Goes to Town), Thomas Thorn (They Came to Cordura)...Father Michael Logan (I Confess), Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird)

 

Some I like because of their amazing transformation:  Charlotte Vale (Now, Voyager), Billie Dawn (Born Yesterday), Judith Traherne (Dark Victory)

 

Some I like simply because they are memorable: Animal (Stalag 17), Margo Channing (All About Eve), Baby Jane Hudson (Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?), Norma Desmond (Sunset Boulevard), Rhett Butler (GWTW), Scarlett O'Hara (GWTW)

2012 Preview for ALL GOOD THINGS

Yep...Monty has asked me to be one of his classic movie goddesses! YAY!

I think 2012 is poised to be a great year for my blog. Well I hope it will. Just wanted to highlight some of the things I will be doing once the new year rings in. Some notable actresses who will be the classic movie goddesses in 2012 include Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth, Anne Baxter, Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo. I will have some distinguished guests in the form of Emily from The Silver Screen Affair, Becky of Classic Becky's Brain Food and Alicia Garbo of British Beauties. And plenty more friends and bloggers showing up this year. My yearly favorite Classic Film Actress tourney returns with a bigger and bolder tournament. It goes from 64 to 128 contestants, spread out over 4 blogs. Helping me will be John of Mythical Monkey (who handles the 30’s portion) and Desiree of Rosalind Russell (who handles the 40’s portion). I will take care of the 50’s and 60’s on my blog All Good Things and Noir and Chick Flicks (thanks Dawn for allowing me to hold part of the tournament there). I will continue with the weekly classic stars match play as well, which has proven to be fun. And of course the usual film reviews, theme picture series (At The Beach), Classic Horror Movie Festival, From Then To Now, If It’s Tuesday Then It Must Be Grace Kelly, and so much more.

And I hope to do some spotlights on actors too. Up first will be William Holden (that will make Patti happy). So expect good things in 2012 here on All Good Things. Meanwhile over on my other blog, Screwball Cinema, I know I have kind of slacked off over there, but I promise to get things fired up and going again. I’m thinking about doing a tournament over there, sometime in the summer. And doing more reviews as well. So here’s to a great year not just for me and my blogs, but for everyone else too and that we all have just an amazing time!

It's AUDREYWEEK on MCM (Monty's Classic Movies)

A few months ago I bought a set of 4 Audrey Hepburn movies for $15 bucks. What a sweet deal! Since she is my classic movie goddess of the month I figure I would dedicate a week to watching her films. And thanks to my friend Lorie who let me borrow her copy of My Fair Lady to make it complete. The other films I will be watching are Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Funny Face and Paris When It Sizzles. Beginning tomorrow night and running all week long. May take two days to complete My Fair Lady since it's kind of long.

Drama Filled Thursdays (COP DRAMAS)

Another week and another batch of my favorite classic dramas. This time I chose the theme of cop/detective dramas. So let's get started shall we.

UNION STATION (1950)

 Exciting thriller set in LA, about a train station policeman named Lt. Willie Calhoun (super performance by William Holden) chasing down a ruthless kidnapper. The bad guy has taken the blind daughter of a millionaire and holds her for ransom. The kidnapping is seen by the rich man's secretary (a solid Nancy Olson). Calhoun swears that he will find the girl and put the kidnapper down, and everyone believes him because Calhoun is one hell of a cop. A very short film at about 80 minutes long, but it is packed with riveting drama and some terrific action. Holden is top notch as the policeman, this being one of his best performances ever. And Lyle Bettger is memorable as bad guy Joe Beacon, the kind you love to hate. Union Station is one of those little films that not too many people have heard about, much less seen, but it is one terrific movie. One of my personal favorites.

DETECTIVE STORY (1951)

 One day in a New York City police precinct where all kinds of people intersect. Kirk Douglas is the tough detective who is dealing with a case involving an abortionist. It also has a shoplifter, two dangerous burglars, and an embezzler. A taut in your face crime drama that features a strong performance by Mr. Douglas and another good one by Eleanor Parker who plays his wife. One of the best of the detective movies from the 1950's.

BULLITT (1968)

Steve McQueen is San Francisco cop Lt. Frank Bullitt who becomes embroiled in a complicated case involving a witness who was murdered under his protection. The witness was a Chicago mobster who was going to turn evidence against his organization. Making things difficult for Frank is an ambitious congressman named Chalmers (played by Robert Vaughn) who wants to make a name for himself by taking on the mob in this high profile case. Bullitt is definitely a police procedural with scenes of collecting evidence and discussing cases and shaking down informants. But it is an excellent police procedural which benefits from a stellar turn by McQueen. He is so perfect in the role there is no doubt that this is his movie. But he gets outstanding support from Vaughn, Robert Fell, George Sanford Brown, Robert Duvall (as a wily cab driver) and the breath-taking Jacqueline Bissett as Frank's girlfriend. And let's not forget that awesome car chase sequence involving Frank's Shelby mustang and the bad guys Dodge Charger. It is arguably one of the greatest car chases on film ever made. And it's cool seeing McQueen doing most of his own driving. Bullitt is one of my favorite films of all time. It's awesome! Plus it has that cool jazzy music score!

THE BIG HEAT (1953)

Top notch drama centering on dedicated cop Dave Bannion (superb performance by Glenn Ford) who takes on police corruption after a fellow officer commits suicide and his wife is killed. All that happens in the opening 30 minutes btw. Once Bannion figures out what gangster is involved he wants payback. Gritty and violent drama directed by Fritz Lang and co-starring Gloria Grahame and Lee Marvin. This is one excellent film.

IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (1967)

Awesome cop drama set in a small Mississippi town where a murder has taken place. Police Chief Bill Gillespie (played by Rod Steiger) is a good officer with some racial prejudices. So when Philadelphia detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) is waiting at the train station to leave town, he is actually arrested as a suspect. Once matters are cleared up and Tibb's captain tells him to offer his assistance to the local law in help with the murder, he and the chief begrudgingly work together. Masterful film that is even more impressive when you consider it was made at the time of civil  unrest of the 60's. Steiger and Poitier make a potent team and it's great seeing their characters getting past their racial differences to work together to solve this crime. Winner of  Best Picture Oscar as well as a Best Actor Oscar for Steiger. And followed by a long tv series in the late 80's thru the mid 90's.

It's No. 1 CARY GRANT vs. No.2 WILLIAM HOLDEN for all the marbles...

In what's sure to be a great championship match...Cary Grant will face William Holden. Well I'm hoping it to be a great match but so far Cary has just rolled through this tournament. He crushed Paul Newman 45-9 and that match was over during the first day. Here are the results of Cary's romp so far: Round 1 he beat Robert Taylor 51-6; Round 2 he beat Joel McCrea 37-9; Round 3 he beat Gary Cooper 30-10; Round 4 he beat Jimmy Stewart 16-10, which was his closest match. William Holden also proved to be very dominant in the 50's bracket. Round 1 he beat Danny Kaye 41-5; Round 2 he beat Montgomery Clift 26-12; Round 3 he beat Kirk Douglas 29-6; and in Round 4 he beat Robert Mitchum 18-12, his closest match. And then the nail biter he just had with William Powell, outlasting him 27-26. So now Grant and Holden will battle for it all starting Thursday morning. The match will run through Sunday 7 pm EST. Good luck to both men.

Nah…it ain’t even close. But the other semi-final match involving the two Bills: Holden and
Powell is going down to the wire. Powell currently clings to a 21-19 lead. There is one more
Full day of voting, so if you haven’t casted a vote yet, please do so. Once we have our
Winners from these two matches, the championship final will begin Thursday and run
Through Sunday evening.

The Classic Movie Actor Tournament FINAL FOUR begins now...

After a month of competitive matches between the 64 top classic movie actors over four decades, the final four begins today. Match 1 has two top seeds in Cary Grant and Paul Newman facing off while Match 2 has a battle of the Bills..Holden and Powell. These matches will run through Wednesday and then we will the final match between the last two men standing. Good luck to all.

The Men's FINAL FOUR is now set...

Paul Newman beat Sidney Poitier 26-9 for the last spot in the Classic Movie Actor Tournament. He joins William Powell, Cary Grant, and William Holden. I will have the Final Four begin on Sunday afternoon. I can't wait to see who wins, but everyone knows my favorite actor is Cary, so that's who I'm going for. As far as my final four picks went: I got Cary and William Holden right. I had also chose Errol Flynn and Jack Lemmon. By the way Paul Newman joins Cary as the only other top seed to advance to the final four (men or women). And guess what, they face off against each other first. Ouch! Anyway, congratulations guys. William Holden defeats Robert Mitchum 18-12 to win a spot in the Classic Movie Actor Final Four

Fan favorite and second seed William Holden beat bad boy Robert Mitchum 18-12 to earn a trip to the classic movie actor final four. Holden joins 30's era champion William Powell and 40's era champion Cary Grant. And now must wait on the outcome of the 60's era bracket which begins tomorrow. I know one lady is extremely happy that Bill won and her name is Patti.

2nd seed William Holden and 9th seed Robert Mitchum will face off in the final match of the 50's era bracket to the Classic Movie Actor Tournament. Neither men had any trouble in their semi-final matches as Holden blew away 6th seed Kirk Douglas 29-6 and Mitchum beat 4th seed Burt Lancaster 23-12. This upcoming final match should be a good one as both Holden and Mitchum have conisderable fanbases. The winner earns a spot in the Classic Movie Actor Final Four, where William Powell and Cary Grant await. The match begins immediately and will run thru Sunday 7pm EST.

John Wayne, The Duke is sent home early in Round 2 of the 50's Era Classic Movie Actor Tournament

Round 2 of the 1950's bracket for the Classic Movie Actor tournament yielded one upset as 3rd seed John Wayne was edged out by 6th seed Kirk Douglas 20-18. The other favorites easily won their matches as perennial favorite and 2nd seed William Holden blasted 7th seed Montgomery Clift 26-12. 9th seed bad boy Robert Mitchum ended 16th seed Alec Guinness cinderella run 26-9. And 4th seed Burt Lancaster beat 12th seed Frank Sinatra 22-17.

Happy Birthday William Holden and Anne Shirley

Happy Birthday to William Holden (1918 - 1981) and Anne Shirley (1918 - 1993).
Holden is one of my favorite actors and some of my favorite films of his include Sunset Boulevard, Stalag 17, Golden Boy, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Union Station and The Wild Bunch.

Some of Shirley's films that are my favorites include Government Girl with Olivia de Havilland, Stella Dallas, Murder My Sweet, and Vigil in the Night with Carole Lombard.

And by some twist of fate, not only were these two born on the same day, but the same year too.

Stanwyck may headline Golden Boy, but it's William Holden who shines the most.

Another golden film from that golden year of 1939 is Golden Boy, starring Barbara Stanwyck (my classic movie goddess of the month) and introducing William Holden in his first major starring role as boxer/violinst Joe Bonaparte. And what a performance Holden gives. He is truly electrifying as the hot tempered but music loving Joe who is torned between boxing, which he is really good at, and playing the violin, which he is even better at. Enter Tom Moody (played by Adolphe Menjou) as his boxing promoter, who decides to put Joe into a fight when his regular fighter is injured during a practice bout with Joe ironically enough. Moody is not really game to do it, until his long suffering girlfriend Lorna Moon (Stanwyck) convinces him otherwise. Lorna sees Joe as her meal ticket to win some fights and make Tom some money, so he can finally divorce his wife and marry her. The plan is going well until Joe's father gets wind and doesn't like the fact that Joe has all but given up on music. The father is played by Lee J. Cobb, who gives a strong performance as well.

Golden Boy is top notch entertainment fro yesteryear. And even though it's story is about boxing, it doesn't concentrate solely on it. In fact you only see one boxing match at the end of the film, that's a pretty good one. For most of the film, the drama comes from the characters and the situations they are put in. Look out for smooth Joseph Calleia as mobster Eddie Fuselli who wants a piece of Joe to make him some money. Golden Boy gets a magnificent performance by Holden. It would be 20 more years later before he would deliver a performance that matches this one. I'm talking about Stalag 17 in case you were wondering. But here, Holden is very powerful as Joe, as he is always on a slow simmer, ready to boil over. He does calm down though when in the presence of Lorna. Stanwyck is perfect as usual, with her Lorna being the girl who has seen it all and pretty much as given up on finding real love. Her heart has been hardened due to her dealings with crooked promoters, gangsters, and married men. So when she finally meets Joe, her outlook on life begins to change. Her chemistry with Holden is amazing, as she petitioned the studio to choose Holden for this part and the rest is history. Golden Boy is one of the greatest films I  have ever seen. It doesn't get any better than this and it's cool to see a star in the making with Holden's truly amazing performance. This is why he is one of my favorite actors,  because of his intensity and laid back demeanor. Golden Boy is in a class all by itself.

All Good Things In August

As the summer hits the hottest month for most, I hope to keep things exciting here on my blog. I've decided for my classic movie goddess in August will be Rosalind Russell, who stars in my favorite movie of all time, His Girl Friday. I will be posting about her all month long. My guest blogger for the month will be Laura, from Laura's Miscellaneous Musings, which is one of my favorite blog sites I hang out. I mean Laura gives out so much information and great posts it is a joy to read. It's better to read her posts than to read the actual TCM guide. She is that thorough. Also I plan to spotlight William Holden, which I was going to do back in July, but never got to it. And the usual scatterings of favorite lists and photos and such. August should be a very good month here at All Good Things.
