Round Three Matches: Sophisticates and Drama Queens

Only one top seed made it through to the category final match..Jean Simmons. She will face Anne Bancroft in the Sophisticates finale match while over in the Drama Queens bracket, 3rd seed Catherine Deneuve will face 5th seed Susannah York. Matches begin later on tonight and will run through Wednesday night.

Round Two (Part One) Final Results

There was a lot of scoring in the second round of the tourney. And a few upsets as well. Here are the final numbers for each era.

Records were being set left and right in this era and tons of voters showed up to contribute on average 110 votes per match. Gloria Swanson flirted with most votes registered in a single match with 82, falling 1 vote shy of Irene Dunne's record of 83 votes from just last week. And Marlene Dietrich has the dubious distinction of having the most votes in a losing capacity. 


40'S ERA

Talk about upset city. This era produced 3 upsets out of the four matches. The biggest one has to be Vivien Leigh losing to Gene Tierney. Leigh becomes the first final four finalist from last year tourney to make an early exit. Quite a shock. 2nd seeds Katharine Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman also were sent home early. Kate lost to Olivia De Havilland while Bergman fell behind early to Lauren Bacall and could never recover. Only Bette Davis advanced as a top seed, crushing Joan Fontaine.


50'S ERA

Ava rolls over Susan Hayward

No close matches here as the winners rolled on average to a 25 point margin victory. Last year final four finalist Grace Kelly doubled up on Sophia Loren. Elizabeth Taylor, who was sent packing in the second round last year wasn't about to let that happen again. She destroyed Anne Baxter. Ava Gardner whipped up on Susan Hayward. And the much anticipated match between Audrey Hepburn and Deborah Kerr ended up being not so competitive. Hepburn pulled away and never looked back.


60'S ERA

A top seed is going home early as Julie Christie falls to Susannah York in a very close match. The other top seed Jean Simmons had no such problem as she lit up Claudia Cardinale. Catherine Deneuve finally put away the tough Lee Remick. And 6th seed Anne Bancroft continues to work her magic with another upset of a higher seed. This time it's Faye Dunaway who falls victim to Anne.


Winners of this round will begin round 3 competition on Monday.

What an awesome first round we had last week across all four blogs hosting the favorite classic movie actress tournament. Now we begin round 2 with some great match-ups. These matches begin tomorrow and will run through Wednesday night 7 pm EST. I think the best match will be Lee Remick against Catherine Deneuve.

RIP Susannah York (1939 - 2011)

Susannah York, the British actress whose gamine looks and demure persona made her an icon of the swinging 60s, has died at the age of 72. She passed away Saturday following a long battle with bone marrow cancer.

York won acclaim for her roles in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? – the 1969 film role for which she was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe – as well as A Man For All Seasons in 1966 and as the feisty section officer who took on Kenneth More in the stirring second world war epic Battle of Britain in 1969.

She also had an extensive and critically acclaimed stage career, which included roles in The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs and Henry James's play Appearances, and continued to act late into her life. She was also a children's author, penning two fantasy novels.

Other notable film roles include Tom Jones (1963), The Killing of Sister George (1968), Happy Birthday Wanda June (1971), The Maids (1974), and Superman (1978) as Kal-El's birth mother Lara.
