Doesn't Joan look marvelous?

Joan's birthday may have been yesterday but this photo was too good not too post, even a day later. Here is Joan cutting her cake with some help from friends Clark Gable and Greer Garson...

Classic Movie Goddess Of The Month - Shirley Jones (September)
A new month and a new classic movie goddess. This time it's Shirley Jones. And with Shirley, I will be changing up my format just a bit. Instead of the usual bio about the goddess of the month I will list my favorite things about said goddess and why I love them so much. I will also list the films of Shirley that I have seen and talk about them in a casual manner instead of the usual review. And I will still post pics and facts and videos and all the usual stuff. Just a few tweaks, nothing major. Below is the list of films that I have seen of Shirley and will be commenting on this month. Hope everyone will join me and Shirley for what's sure to be very entertaining.
OKLAHOMA (1955)
ELMER GANTRY (1960)
TWO RODE TOGETHER (1961)
THE MUSIC MAN (1962)
THE COURTSHIP OF EDDIE'S FATHER (1963)
A TICKLISH AFFAIR (1963)
THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS (1965)
THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB (1970)
TANK (1984)
And I will of course talk about THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY (1970 - 1974)

A Blog Everyone Should Be Following: Musings Of A Morleysaurus
Jennifer Cooper writes one of the coolest blogs out there in blogland called Musings of a Morleysaurus. She hails from Arbroath, Angus in good old Scotland. She is a self-proclaimed horror nerd and is proud of it. She is a great supporter of indie films and women produced/directed films. Her blog focuses on mainly horror but she also stretches out to include other genres and even dabbles in the classics. She loves Grace Kelly and His Girl Friday to name just some of her favorites. Her recent posts include a 30 day horror movie challenge: A Favorite Classic Horror Movie - The Creature From The Black Lagoon. Oh she is also a fan of such series as Luther, The X-Files, and Sons of Anarchy. I recently started following her terrific blog and I enjoy immensely. I highly recommend her to all of my followers with a taste for all good things wicked and scary and cool. Oh and did I mention she loves Kate Winslet. I had to throw that in there too. But I guess you already knew that from the photo above.

A Blog Everyone Should Be Following: Blame Mame - A Classic Film Blog
I came across this great new blog because the author recently commented on my friend Irene's blog and I followed his profile back to his blog. Boy am I glad I did. Craig, the author of Put The Blame on Mame (awesome title by the way) has a very cool and fascinating new blog. I was hooked immediately. Craig just started this blog back in May so it is very new but it is now one of my favorite must read blogs. He states that he has been interested in Classic Hollywood for over 10 years and you can tell by the posts he has written. He has done posts on Bette Davis, showcasing her singing abilities which was very unique. And a post on My Favorite Wife, which is one of my favorite movies. So please stop by to check out this wonderful new blog. You will be glad you did.

Happy Birthday Joan Blondell (1906 - 1979)
One of my favorite screwball comediennes is Joan Blondell and today is her birthday. Joan perfected the wise-cracking girl who was always in the middle of some wild and crazy scenario. She really shined in the films of the 30's, usually either in musicals (Gold Diggers of 1933, Footlight Parade, Dames) or screwball comedies (Kansas City Princess, Stand-In, Smarty, Good Girls Go To Paris). She also starred in several melodramas and gangster flicks during this decade such as Public Enemy, Blonde Crazy, He Was Her Man). And let's not forget her sensational pairings with Glenda Farrell. These two women rocked the film scene like no other female pair in history. In such films like Kansas City Princess, We're in The Money, Traveling Saleslady, Miss Pacific Fleet, and Havana Widows. These two were awesome together. I plan to write a special post on this duo very soon. So stay tuned. In the meantime, let's all wish Joan a Happy Birthday!

ANNE FRANCIS on TCM today
Yesterday it was Carole Lombard, now it's Anne Francis. My god TCM knows what makes my day. Some choice Anne films that will be shown include Bad Day At Black Rock (1955) with Spencer Tracy; Susan Slept Here (1954) with Debbie Reynolds and Dick Powell with Anne looking all so stunning; Blackboard Jungle (1955) with Glenn Ford and Sidney Poitier; and of course the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet (1956). Looking forward to it.

The classic musical tournament I'm doing for my friend Dawn over at her blog, Singin' and Dancing Back in Time has begun. I started a day early..couldn't wait any longer. Classic Movie Goddess Of The Month - Esther Williams: Part 3 (Video)
As I have not seen enough of Esther movies to compile an essential viewing list of her films, I thought I would close out her month with this beautiful video of clips of her more famous film sequences. And I'm hoping to see Easy To Wed eventually as I recorded it about a week ago from TCM. Now of the few films I have seen of Esther that I can recommend include Bathing Beauty (1944) with Red Skelton; Skirts Ahoy (1952); and Dangerous When Wet (1953) best remembered for her swimming sequence with Tom and Jerry. So hopefully next time Esther is my goddess of the month I will have watched more of her films to write about.

THE MONTIES: 1940 - HIS GIRL FRIDAY nearly sweeps the Monties....
Time to kick off a new decade with another presentation of The Monties, my own version of the Academy Awards. Let's get right to it, shall we.
BEST FILM:
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
KITTY FOYLE
WATERLOO BRIDGE
THE PHILADELPHIA STORY
REBECCA
HIS GIRL FRIDAY (WINNER)
THE GRAPES OF WRATH
THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT
MY FAVORITE WIFE
My favorite film of all time, His Girl Friday, is the easy choice for me as Best Film of 1940. A perfect screwball comedy that has the fastest speaking dialogue ever. Check out the other films I nominated this year as two more Cary Grant films made the list with The Philadelphia Story and My Favorite Wife.
BEST DIRECTOR:
JOHN FORD - THE GRAPES OF WRATH
HOWARD HAWKS - HIS GIRL FRIDAY (WINNER)
ALFRED HITCHCOCK - REBECCA
GEORGE CUKOR - THE PHILADELPHIA STORY
ROBERT Z. LEONARD - PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
The second Montie goes to Hawks for his smooth direction of His Girl Friday. Hawks was a master of several different genres and he showed he could switch gears from comedy to drama to western with the greatest of ease.
BEST ACTOR:
LAURENCE OLIVER - REBECCA
CARY GRANT - HIS GIRL FRIDAY (WINNER)
HENRY FONDA - THE GRAPES OF WRATH
JAMES STEWART - THE PHILADELPHIA STORY
ROBERT TAYLOR - WATERLOO BRIDGE
Mr. Grant picks up his second Montie for his wonderful turn as the scheming and manipulative newspaper editor Walter Burns in His Girl Friday. This is one of my favorite performances by Cary as he is just phenomenal. Sorry Jimmy.
BEST ACTRESS:
VIVIEN LEIGH - WATERLOO BRIDGE
JOAN FONTAINE - REBECCA
ROSALIND RUSSELL - HIS GIRL FRIDAY (WINNER)
GINGER ROGERS - KITTY FOYLE
KATHERINE HEPBURN - THE PHILADELPHIA STORY
Rosalind Russell easily matched Cary tit for tat in His Girl Friday with her amazing performance as ace reporter Hildy Johnson. But this race was really close as I thought Leigh was outstanding with her follow-up to Gone with The Wind in Waterloo Bridge and a really good turn by Joan Fontaine in Rebecca. Sorry girls, but Roz gets this Montie. Her second consecutive I might add. Go Roz!
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
GEORGE SANDERS - REBECCA (WINNER)
WALTER BRENNAN - THE WESTERNER
DENNIS MORGAN - KITTY FOYLE
HUMPHREY BOGART - THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT
BASIL RATHBONE - THE MARK OF ZORRO
The sly and urbane George Sanders was very good in the film Rebecca. A foreshadowing of his other great future performance in All About Eve. Maybe he will pick up his second Montie for that performance as well. We shall see.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
JUDITH ANDERSON - REBECCA (WINNER)
JANE DARWELL - THE GRAPES OF WRATH
RUTH HUSSEY - THE PHILADEPHIA STORY
ANN SHERIDAN - THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT
GAIL PATRICK - MY FAVORITE WIFE
While Jane Darwell gave a powerful performance in The Grapes of Wrath, I went with Judith Anderson's truly wicked performance as the sinister Mrs. Danvers. Everytime I see this film, she just creeps me out.
So for the fifth year in a row, a comedy takes home the top prize as His Girl Friday just rolls over the competition and goes home with 4 Monties total. Rebecca grabs the other two awards in the supporting categories.

ALL GOOD THINGS in September
Ahhh, the first taste of fall arrives in this month. And while I may be busy hosting the musical
tournament over at Dawn’s Singin’ and Dancing Back in Time and doing a guest post for Clara
at Via Marguatta 51, I won’t be leaving All Good Things high and dry. Oh and also contributing to
Irene’s And Then They Start To Sparkle. WOW! I will be all over the place next month won’t I?
Anyway here on All Good Things, my classic movie goddess of the month will be Shirley Jones.
Yes, Mama Partridge herself. You know me and Shirley share the same birthday of March 31st, so
I feel a connection to her more than any other star. I think she is a very talented woman and her
films such as The Music Man, Elmer Gantry and Oklahoma show her musical and acting abilities
at her very best. So you know the drill by now, photos, facts, and reviews of her all month long.
The Be My Guest spotlight is on Janine Wild this month and it starts a run of three friends who share a love of classic movies and Irene Dunne. Janine will be naming all her favorites all month long. Following her over the next few months will be her best friends Renata and Desiree. My At The Beach series will be winding down with more pics of stars just hanging out at the beach as the summer season comes to a close. And other assorted goodies when I have the urge to post something like my continuing If It’s Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly series. So please stop by for a visit and spend a little time with me and all the classic stars you could want.

A movie in the morning starts the day off just right....
You know the saying an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well I will go one better.
A movie in the morning will make your day go all so much better. Recently there has been several
good movies on TV in the morning as I get ready to go to work. Either on TCM or some other
movie channel. Now I usually have about an hour once I wake up and get dressed and eat some breakfast with Stephanie (my wife) and Molly and Lucy (our two dogs). So I don’t watch an entire
movie but I do get to watch most of it. The past few days I have seen some gems. Some of which I have never seen before and others for the umpteenth time. Including The Thrill Of It All with Doris Day; Above Suspicion with Joan Crawford; Bringing Up Baby, and this morning I caught some of An Affair To Remember. So I will be posting quite frequently my morning movie that gets my day started off just the right way.

I missed Cary Grant day on TCM...but
Due to my working today at the last minute, I missed TCM's day of showing nothing but Cary Grant movies. Now I own quite a bit of his films so it wasn't too big of a deal, but I still wished I could have seen more of the movies they showed today. I did manage to catch The Philadelphia Story, so it wasn't a total bust. I told my friend Irene, that I will have to do my own Cary Grant day at my home soon.
I'm doing a new tournament over at Singin' and Dancing Back in Time for my friend Dawn
I promised Dawn I would do a musical tournament here on her wonderful blog. At first me and her was going do it together but she doesn’t have the extra time to spare. So I told her I would take care of it and I thought I wouldn’t have time for it either until early next year. Well, guess what the tournament is back on track for it’s original September start. Actually it will kick off Monday, August 29th. There are a total of 64 musicals spread over 4 brackets: 20's/30’s; 1940’s; 1950’s; and the 1960’s. The first week will have the 20's/30’s and the following weeks will focus on the remaining eras. Each era will be comprised of 16 films. I used Wikipedia as the source of all time greatest musicals and made the selections. It wasn’t easy and just like my tournaments I did over on my blog, All Good Things, there are some great choices that got left out. But I do believe I got the majority of the best musicals possible and it should be an exciting tournament. The voting polls will be on the sidebar and only one vote per person will be allowed, so choose your favorites carefully. The first round will last a few days and then the second round will begin almost immediately. I will post the first era matches within a few days. I just wanted to let everyone know that this tournament was coming soon. Have a great day.
Oh and here's the link to Dawn's wonderful blog: Singin' and Dancing Back In Time

First Aid: From Movies to Real Life
At my work today, I had a class on first aid training. I recently volunteered to be one of the first responders for my department. That means I would be responsible for rendering aid to anyone that is injured or becomes ill. But first I would need to go through the six hour training class. And it was very interesting. The instructor was a 30 year EMS veteran and he knew everything you could possibly think of. And as the class went on I kept noticing how certain topics always had a connection to a film or some TV show. So I thought I would do a post about it.
The first topic we covered was rendering CPR to a person who is unconscious. Be it from a heart attack or drowning, that person is not breathing now. So they need to be revived quickly before brain damage sets in. By doing the quick compresses to the chest and breathing into their mouth. And then if you have a defibrillator handy, give them a shock to their system. Well that made me think of the scene from Pulp Fiction, where Uma Thurman nearly overdoses on drugs and John Travolta has to jam the needle into her chest.
And then immediately I thought of Casino Royale when Bond is poisoned and he has to use his defibrillator on himself.
http://youtu.be/hxPIJFNsUzU
The instructor told us that a person has a better chance of being revived from drowning in cold water during a cold period as opposed to warmer waters in warmer days. That reminded me of the scene in The Abyss where Ed Harris lets his wife drown in the cold water because they only have one suit. He swims back to the base and tries to revive her. And it works eventually. Very intense scene.
We also talked about burns, cuts, and more types of possible injuries a person could get. It was a very helpful class and we got plenty of hands on practice with mannequins, where we got to perform CPR. And we also got to perform the heimlich manuever on each other, simulating a person choking on food.
One of the most intense scenes has to be from Flatliners in this clip below as the guys do everything they can to save Julia Roberts.
And with that I willl wrap up this post and let everyone know that I received my training today and a certificate of completion. I feel pretty good about that.
A Blog Everyone Should Be Following: No Time Like The Past
I just started following this blog because the writer, named Perfect Number 6 (is that name cool or what?) started following mine. So when I went to her blog, I found one of the most amazing blogs I've come across yet. She just started writing it back in July but has already amassed 34 posts in that short period of time. I particularly liked her recent post about Favorite Scenes from A Few Dollars More. And a lovely post on swimwear from yesteryear. It appears Mr. Clint Eastwood is her favorite as she has written several posts about him. Hey count me in on that. But please stop by to check out her wonderful new blog. Tell her I sent you.

At the beach: Just Thank you, Monty.. (guest post by Irene Palfy)
Yay! Marilyn Monroe is happy, too!
Thank you so much for that LIEBSTER BLOG AWARD, Monty!!
(- and anyone who wants to know which blogs I pass it on to - look here, please.)
The MONTIES: 1939 - It's all about THE WOMEN...
We have arrived at the golden year of 1939, which many are in agreement as the best year ever for films. You would be hard pressed to find a better year than 1939. So many great films came out that year and you could easily expand all the categories by 5 and it wouldn't seem like filler. Well I have made my choices and some of you might be surprised that I did not choose Gone With The Wind as the film of the year. On with the show.
BEST FILM:
GONE WITH THE WIND
THE WIZARD OF OZ
NINOTCHKA
DARK VICTORY
MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
DODGE CITY
DESTRY RIDES AGAIN
LOVE AFFAIR
WUTHERING HEIGHTS
THE WOMEN (winner)
Oh its gonna be one of those nights by dear friends as The Women upsets heavy favorite Gone With The Wind. Don't get me wrong, GWTW is a certifiable classic and a true epic. But I enjoyed The Women a heckuva lot more. An all star cast of some of the top actresses in film in one of the best comedies ever made. Some might say, that Monty has lost his mind,, choosing The Women over Gone With The Wind. But if you have ever seen this film, you will understand why I chose it. All the women in the film give superb performances and the whole film is just a joy to watch. Some dramatic scenes pop up every now and then but the light frothy comedy is always front and center. Best film of 1939. Hands down.
BEST DIRECTOR:
VICTOR FLEMING - GONE WITH THE WIND
FRANK CAPRA - MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
GEORGE CUKOR - THE WOMEN (winner)
ERNST LUBITSCH - NINOTCHKA
GEORGE MARSHALL - DESTRY RIDES AGAIN
Let me tell ya something...when a man can direct a film whose entire cast is nothing but women, and he can direct said film so flawlessly and get such memorable performances from each and every actress in the film..by god he deserves a Montie. Now Victor Fleming did a truly amazing job on Gone With The Wind, but let's be fair..he got an uncredit assist from Cukor on that film as well. So for the year of 1939, George Cukor is the director of the year. In my book anyway. Cukor wasn't known as the women's film director for nothing.
BEST ACTOR:
CLARK GABLE - GONE WITH THE WIND (winner)
JAMES STEWART - MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
CHARLES LAUGHTON - THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
LAURENCE OLIVIER - WUTHERING HEIGHTS
CARY GRANT - IN NAME ONLY
Clark Gable gives his best performance as the scoundrel Rhett Butler. I never saw Robert Donat in Goodbye Mr. Chips, who beat out Clark for an Oscar as Best Actor, so I can't say if I would have given him a Montie instead of Gable. But since I haven't seen that film, I do know that Gable is perfect in his amazing performance as Rhett. I can honestly say that as fact.
BEST ACTRESS:
BETTE DAVIS - DARK VICTORY
VIVIEN LEIGH - GONE WITH THE WIND (winner)
GRETA GARBO - NINOTCHKA
JUDY GARLAND - THE WIZARD OF OZ
IRENE DUNNE - LOVE AFFAIR
Without a doubt, Vivien Leigh gives an outstanding performance as Scarlett O'Hara. I mean I can't see anyone else doing a better job in this role as Leigh did. The scheming and conniving O'Hara is not a particulary easy character to love but thanks to Leigh's wonderful performance, you can only sit back and just revel in all her grandstanding scenes.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
MELVYN DOUGLAS - NINOTCHKA
CLAUDE RAINS - MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
FRANK MORGAN - THE WIZARD OF OZ (winner)
THOMAS MITCHELL - STAGECOACH
DAVID NIVEN - WUTHERING HEIGHTS
I'm going to go with Frank Morgan in The Wizard of Oz because the man was amazing in this film. In several different roles. He was of course The Wizard of Oz, but also was Professor Marvel, The Gatekeeper, The Carriage Driver and a guard. Wow! He was all over this movie. Here ya go Frank..a well deserved Montie.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
MARGARET HAMILTON - THE WIZARD OF OZ
OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND - GONE WITH THE WIND
HATTIE MCDANIEL - GONE WITH THE WIND
ROSALIND RUSSELL - THE WOMEN (winner)
JOAN CRAWFORD - THE WOMEN (winner)
Another tough choice as all 5 women gave superlative performances. And like 1937's Stage Door, when Lucille Ball and Eve Arden tied and walked away with Monties, there is another tie between two women from the same film. And guess what?...it's not from Gone With The Wind. That's right, I give Monties to Rosalind Russell and Joan Crawford for their terrific performances as Slyvia Fowler and Crystal Allen respectively. Good showing girls.
So that wraps up the first decade of the Monties. I would love to hear everyone's reactions to my picks of 1939. And I say to all the die hard GWTW fans, no hard feelings ok.
Final count..The Women walks away with 4 Monties: Film, Director, Supporting Actress (2) and Gone With The Wind grabs 2 Monties for Actor and Actress.
BEST FILM:

Liebster Blog Award
While I was busy giving out another award to 12 blogging friends of mine, mythical monkey chose me as a recipent of The Liebster Blog award. He stated "and last but certainly not least, Monty at All Good Things, whose best actress and best actor tournaments might be the best things to happen in the blogosphere this year". Wow! Talk about a great comment. That made me just feel awesome and now I know how much my blog means to so many people, especially Mythical Monkey.
Now according to the rules of Liebster, I'm supposed to choose 3-5 more worthy bloggers to pass this award on to. The catch is they have to have less than 300 followers as the award is for blogs that deserve more followers. It wasn't easy to choose only 5 and that's why it took me so long to respond for mine. Mythical Monkey gave me my award on August 9th.
So here we go with my 5 selections:
And Then They Start To Sparkle - According to that Liebster chart, it states that it was started in Germany (probably). Well my first person I chose to receive this award is from Germany. None other than Irene, who has co-hosted my blog and writes her own wonderful blog as well. A very fun and witty blog to be sure.
Via Margutta 51 - My friend Clara who hails from Chile writes this very cool blog. And Clara is very cool herself. She is also a big Audrey Hepburn fan. And very gracious. We had a little bet when Audrey and Grace faced off in my classic actress tournament that whoever lost that match, the loser would have to write a piece on the other person's blog. Well Grace edged out Audrey and Clara immediately wrote a post for my blog with no hesitation. Very cool indeed.
Waitin' On a Sunny Day - How could you not like a blog with a title like this. Sophie who lives in the UK writes this wonderful blog, bringing sunshine into all her followers lives. Her list of favorite actresses is amazing leading off with Deborah Kerr.
Elisa's Classic Films - This was the first year that Elisa started her terrific blog and I remember spotlighting it as a blog to follow. Elisa has wrote nearly 100 posts for the year and shows no signs of slowing down. It's a blog everybody should be following.
And finally, Musings Of A Morleysaurus , from my friend Jennifer. She recently gave me an award and I wanted to return the favor with a different one and BAM! along comes The Liebster. Jen's blog is really, really very cool, with a focus on horror and all things geeky.
So there you have it..my friends who are most deserving of The Liebster Award. This seems like we are in the middle of awards season as so many awards are being handed out left and right. Which I think is very, very cool.
