The 2nd Annual Favorite Classic Movie Actor Tourney
After the recent successes of my Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney, some readers were curious as to when I would be doing another tourney spotlighting the men. Back in 2013 Cary Grant won the inaugural mens tourney which was a no-brainer but now he is ineligible to compete this time around, which means it is wide open. My friend John of Mythical Monkey has graciously volunteered to help me with this event which will begin appropriately enough on Sunday June 19th (Father's Day). It will be 64 actors from 4 decades competing with the top 4 seeds being:
30's era - William Powell
40's era - Humphrey Bogart
50's era - William Holden
60's era - Paul Newman
Those four rankings were based on their finishes in the first tourney.
John will handle the 30's and 50's eras while I will take care of the 40's and 60's era.
Please join us for another grand time and may the best man win..

Lombard Cup Week One Matches
So we begin with the first five matches pairing a classic era actor (20's-60's) against a modern era actor (70's-current) to see which era of actors is more loved. One vote per person and the first week matches will run through Thursday evening. I will tally up the votes and see which actor won their respective match. The winner receives a full point while a tie nets half a point for both competitors. Just like in golf's ryder cup. So here are the breakdowns on the first five matches. Take it away Carole Lombard, who is presiding over this event in honor of naming the cup after her.
MATCH 1:
MATCH 1:
STEVE MCQUEEN (BULLITT, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN)
VS
CLINT EASTWOOD (DIRTY HARRY, UNFORGIVEN, IN THE LINE OF FIRE)
MATCH 2:
SPENCER TRACY (LIBELED LADY, ADAM'S RIB, FATHER OF THE BRIDE)
VS
TOM CRUISE (TOP GUN, A FEW GOOD MEN, BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY)
MATCH 3:
JAMES CAGNEY (WHITE HEAT, PUBLIC ENEMY, ROARING TWENTIES)
VS
HARRISON FORD (STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, THE FUGITIVE)
MATCH 4:
CARY GRANT (HIS GIRL FRIDAY, BRINGING UP BABY, NOTORIOUS)
VS
JOHNNY DEPP (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE)
MATCH 5:
CLARK GABLE (GONE WITH THE WIND, THE MISFITS)
VS
DANIEL DAY-LEWIS (IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, MY LEFT FOOT)
The Lombard Cup: Selection Saturday
This morning I made my selections for the pairings of the 20 matches between classic era and modern era actors. You may be wondering how I chose the pairings. Wonder no more. The pics below show the baskets which I pulled names from at random to make this truly a tourney of chance. Just depends on what actor from the classic era will face a modern era actor. The inspire basket held the classic era actors while the scarecrow basket contained the modern era actors. Funny thing about the inspire basket is that I picked it up at Michael's Arts and Crafts because we needed a new one to hold our mail and letters and such. Well this one looked nice and it cost $12 bucks but was on sale and cost $8. But while standing in the check out line which took forever, a great thing happened. The cashier scanned the barcode and it came up 1 cent. She blared it out on the speaker...We have a one center! The manager came up and verified and I was like whoa, this only cost me one cent? Wow! What a nice surprise. Anyway on with the matches, and please note that each week will feature five matches a week. Each winner gets one point for their respective team and a tie will net half a point for each competitor. I will tally up the points at the end of the month to declare which era racked up the most wins and points. The first five matches begin tomorrow evening and will run through Thursday evening. And this was really fun picking the matches as it was like picking blindly and not having a set ranking to go by. Really cool. Oh and I had to had another match just so things would not end in a tie. They still may but at least there is a better chance with 21 matches instead of 20 that it won't. Thanks to my friend and fellow blogger Patti for mentioning the fact that there was no Sean Connery. As much as I wanted to include him in this year's Cup I went with another of Patti's faves, Montgomery Clift. He will face modern era actor Robert Duvall in the bonus match. But if this turns out to be an annual event then I will drop some actors from this year's competition and include new ones for next year.
MATCH 1: STEVE MCQUEEN vs CLINT EASTWOOD (Clint could have easily been chosen for
the 60's era but since his career achieved even greater heights later on, I decided he would best fit
on the modern era team)
MATCH 2: SPENCER TRACY vs TOM CRUISE
MATCH 3: JAMES CAGNEY vs HARRISON FORD
MATCH 4: CARY GRANT vs JOHNNY DEPP
MATCH 5: CLARK GABLE vs DANIEL DAY-LEWIS
MATCH 6: JOHN WAYNE vs ROBERT DOWNEY, JR
MATCH 7: HUMPHREY BOGART vs AL PACINO
MATCH 8: SIDNEY POITIER vs RUSSELL CROWE
MATCH 9: GREGORY PECK vs LIAM NEESON
MATCH 10: BURT LANCASTER vs GEORGE CLOONEY
MATCH 11: GARY COOPER vs GARY OLDMAN
MATCH 12: JACK LEMMON vs LEONARDO DICAPRIO
MATCH 13: KIRK DOUGLAS vs CHRISTOPHER WALKEN
MATCH 14: WILLIAM HOLDEN vs ROBERT DENIRO
MATCH 15: WILLIAM POWELL vs SAMUEL L. JACKSON
MATCH 16: PAUL NEWMAN vs MICHAEL DOUGLAS
MATCH 17: ERROL FLYNN vs TOM HANKS
MATCH 18: JAMES STEWART vs JACK NICHOLSON
MATCH 19: CHARLIE CHAPLIN vs MORGAN FREEMAN
MATCH 20: MARLON BRANDO vs DENZEL WASHINGTON
MATCH 21: MONTGOMERY CLIFT vs ROBERT DUVALL
I have to say some of these matches should be very, very exciting. Grant vs Depp. Bogie against Pacino. Holden vs DeNiro. Stewart vs Nicholson. Brando vs Washington. Oh my! I will post the first five matches in a post later on this evening with some stats and trivia. Can't wait for this thing to get started.

The Lombard Cup details..Team Classic vs Team Modern
As I wrote in an earlier post I am setting up a new tourney for November. This time focusing on the men. But this will not be the regular kind of tourney. I am combining my love of golf's ryder cup play with actors. It will match up the top 20 classic era actors against the top 20 modern era actors. I have compiled the lists based on amount of awards won, box office strength, recognition and overall popularity. There will be five matches per week so this event will run all month long. Whoever wins their match gets a full point. A tie nets half a point for each competitor. And by the end of the month, I will tally up the total points to see which era gained the most. Which will give that era the Lombard Cup for this year. I hope to do this on a yearly basis. Maybe next year will be the women, then after that a specific type of actor, and so on. Or maybe a batch of other actors who didn't make the cut this year. The possibilities are endless. Here are the actors who will be competing. The match selection process will be done on Friday as I will put the names in a hat so to speak and pull a classic era actor then a modern actor and that's who will be matched up against each other. And no one is ranked, so that factor will be irrelevant this time. The randomness of this will make for a compelling tourney I think. And I know most people would figure that the classic era group would just dominate over the modern era group but I have to say that the modern era is pretty loaded. Should be fun to watch unfold. Just always thought this would be a cool thing to do, to see how the modern era stacks up against the classic era! And Carole Lombard, who I named the cup after will be our mistress of ceremony. The first five matches will begin Sunday November 4th.

The Lombard Cup begins next month
Combining my love of golf's match play and classic stars once again, I will have a new event beginning next month. Still working on the details but I can share some info. One..this won't be a regular tourney. More like match play, where it's individual matches instead of a mammoth type tournament. And two, it focuses on the men this time instead of the women. But it does have a featured theme. Oh and three it is named after my favorite actress ever, Carole Lombard. Kind of misleading since it will be all about actors, but hey that's me. I will have more details before the week is out. Stay tuned....
Carole gladly accepted the role of mistress of ceremony
for my next event

A new tournament, but this time...I'm not the one doing it
My friend Kristen over at Journeys in Classic Film is holding a leading actor tournament, beginning May 20th. She said she loved my tourneys so much that she got the urge to do one herself. Her tourney will feature 40 actors spanning 8 decades (1930-2010) with each era having five actors competing. This sounds so cool as Kristen is incorporating modern era actors as well. Let's see if Cary Grant, who won my favorite actor tourney last year will save similar results in Kristen's. Here's the link to her blog where the competition will take place.

Oh and while you're over at Kristen's blog, check out the contest she is doing, which has a prize of Bernard F. Dick's book: Hollywood Madonna-Loretta Young. So please stop by to have a chance to win this book. Tell Kristen you came by way of Monty. Thanks everyone!
