Be My Guest - Kristen (Journeys In Classic Film)

My guest this month is one pretty cool blogger named Kristen. She writes the awesomely amazing blog Journeys in Classic Film. We became friends last year and share a love for classic film. Right now she has this amazing tourney going on featuring the best actresses from the classic era to the modern era. And she will be helping me next month for my annual classic movie actress tourney. I thought it was high time everyone got to meet her. Some already know her but some will be meeting her for the first time. Take it away Kristen. 1. What made you start blogging?

Kristen: My blog started out as an experiment to see if I could actually commit to keeping one (I have a lot of one and done entries on the Interwebs).  When I started I was/am working for two other sites that kept me writing about contemporary, opening-weekend movies, and I wanted a chance to write about classic movies, which I don't normally get to discuss so as I was starting to blog regularly I noticed it was shifting more towards discussing classic movies.  The rest, as they say, is history!

2. Who are your favorite classic stars?

Kristen: Veronica Lake, first and foremost, is my blog mascot so she's top.  Other leading ladies include Lauren Bacall, Natalie Wood, Marilyn Monroe, Julie Andrews, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Blondell, Bette Davis, Ann-Margaret, and Ingrid Bergman.  As for the men, I'll be hard pressed to find a boyfriend who won't have me comparing him to William Holden and Robert Mitchum.  Also adore Cary Grant, Warren Beatty, William Powell, Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando, Gene Kelly, and Jack Lemmon.  

Me: I reallty can't argue with none of your choices Kristen.

3. What are some of your favorite films?

Kristen: Such a lengthy list as any film blogger would say.  I'll leave it to classics only: Singin' in the Rain, Anne of the Thousand Days, Splendor in the Grass, West Side Story, Night of the Hunter, Sabrina, Bringing Up Baby, The Big Sleep, Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Some Like It Hot, Bye Bye Birdie, The Thin Man, A Streetcar Named Desire, Sullivan's Travels, I Married a Witch, Xanadu (yes, I included that).

Me: Some great films you named that I also love with the exception of West Side Story and Xanadu.

4. Describe your first classic movie experience

Kristen: I did see the Disney re-releases a few times, but my seminal classic movie experiences have to be in 7th and 11th grades.  In 7th grade my history teacher showed us Anne of the Thousand Days to spotlight the Tudor dynasty.  I was the only one who loved it, and actually wrote an extra credit paper on it.  Later in high school I took a film class and watching Singin in the Rain made me realize I needed to watch more.  So both my experiences were in a classroom (how sad that film classes are hardly offered now).

Me: I saw that in 10th grade English lit...love that movie! Like you too.

5. What films upon first viewing did you not like, but later on after re-watching loved them?

Kristen: Casablanca first off.  After seeing that in a theater, I really appreciated how representative of classic film it truly is.  Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Jaws.

Me: All three are winners in my book.

6.Describe the perfect way for you to watch a film

Kristen: The perfect setting would be in an old movie palace that actually showed classic movies in their heyday.  We used to have an old theater like that in my town, but it closed.

7. How many friends, family member or co-workers share your love of classic films?

Kristen: My mother is probably the second biggest classic film fan, but when I recommend her movies she has a very distinct taste (she hates screwball comedies) and we don't usually like the same films.  My best friend likes some, but she's particular to romances which I'm iffy on.  

Me: Oh she doesn't like screwball comedies...man those are my favorites!

8. What is your favorite time period: the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's or 60's?

Kristen: The 40s

Me: Good call...The 30's are my favorites but I also love the 40's quite a bit too.

9.  What are some of your favorite film quotes?

Kristen: "I can never have children."  "We'll adopt some" - Some Like It Hot.  "I sent her as far as I could, since we don't own Scotland" -Anne of the Thousand Days. "And his whiskers are real, too!" -Miracle on 34th Street (something about the way little Natalie Wood says this line makes me smile). "Can I still come over and push you in the pool?" -Sullivan's Travels.  "But with a little sex in it" -Sullivan's Travels "Isn't it better for a girl to be preoccupied with sex instead of occupied?" -The Moon is Blue

10. What classic films have you yet to see for one reason or another?

Kristen: Citizen Kane, The Godfather: Part 2, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Best Years of Our Lives, any of the work of Ingmar Bergman

Me: You have to see The Best Years of Our Lives Kristen..It is beyond great. Patti will back me up on that!

11.  What is your favorite genre?

Kristen: Drama which, to me, includes film noir, political, historical, ec.

Me: Cool..and there are tons of great dramas for sure

12. If you threw a movie theme party, describe how you would do it. The costumes, decorations, food, etc.

Kristen: It could be because I saw Gangster Squad, but I'm dying to do a 1940s Hollywood glamour type party based around The Big Sleep, The Blue Dahlia or Double Indemnity.  Of course the ladies would have coiffed hair a la the peekaboo style of Veronica Lake.  Lots of pinstripes, fedoras, hopefully my friends would be into talking like Edward G. Robinson.  

Me: Haha...awesome!

13. What are some films that are widely loved that you couldn't care less about?

Kristen:  I always state my distaste for Gone With the Wind.  I also don't get the adoration for Mrs. Miniver.  Other movies I hate to admit I don't like include The Women, An American in Paris, and The Band Wagon.

Me: Right there with ya on An American in Paris and The Band Wagon. Don't like either of them.

14. Who’s the biggest film fanatic that you know? Besides yourself of course.

Kristen: Most of the people I know that are bigger film fanatics are bloggers such as you Monty, Nick Powell of Cinematic Katzenjammer (although he's modern films), the amazing Patti of They Don't Make 'Em Like They  Used To, Lindsay of The Motion Pictures, the group at French Toast Sunday

15. And finally who are some of your favorite film characters?

Kristen: The entire cast of Some Like It Hot, Max Cady from Cape Fear, Harry Powell from Night of the Hunter, Jennifer of I Married a Witch, Sabrina Fairchild and David Larrabee of Sabrina, Elizabeth Lane of Christmas in Connecticut, Anne Boleyn of Anne of the Thousand Days, Donald Greasham of The Moon is Blue, the second Mrs. de Winter in Rebecca, Alicia Huberman and Devlin from Notorious, Susan of Bringing Up Baby

Me: Yes to all of those characters especially Elizabeth Lane..,my favorite Barbara Stanwyck role and film.

Hall Of Fame Inductees for January: Hitch and Princess Grace

Another month means two more inductees for All Good Things Hall Of Fame. And they have a connection to each other. Alfred Hitchcock and Grace Kelly. Kelly starred in three of Hitch's films during the 50's: Rear Window, Dial M For Murder and To Catch A Thief. Here are the qualifications that got them both into the Hall of Fame.

First Grace Kelly is one of my mainstays here on my blog. She is second only to Carole Lombard in the number of posts I have written about her. 78 counting this one. Carole has 79. She has won a trophy for Favorite Leading Lady in a Hitchcock film, in a tourney I did last winter. Previously, her film Rear Window grabbed Best Hitchcock Film in a similar tourney a year before that. And she has made it to the final four in the two Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourneys I hold every year. All so close to winning that trophy as well. The only thing Grace hasn't done is won a Montie (my version of the Oscars) and the only reason that is, because I am only on year 1947. So in due time, she may win one of those as well.

and To Catch A Thief...well in my book they are!

Now Hitchcock has won a Montie. He won Best Director for one of my favorite films of his, Shadow of A Doubt. Marking only the second director to gain entrance to the Hall of Fame. The other being, William Wyler. And we haven't hit his peak period yet, so who knows how many more Monties he can win. So give a warm welcome to Grace and Alfred as the new members of AGT's Hall Of Fame.

Top Movie Cops - a new series

I love cop movies. From the classics to the modern films. The police procedural. The cop buddy film. The cop undercover film. All kinds. So I thought it would be cool to do a weekly feature on what I think are some of the best movie cops. And since Bruce Willis is returning as John McClane for the fifth time in Today Is A Good Day To Die Hard..on Valentine's Day no less, I thought his character would be the perfect cop to begin with. I will alternate between classic and modern cop characters every week. So let's get to it shall we..

History and Timeline: New York cop John McClane visits his estranged wife Holly on Christmas eve at her workplace, Nakotomi Plaza in Los Angeles for a Christmas celebration. But a band of terrorists led by Hans Gruber crash the party and it's up to McClane to save the day. Two years later, he would be at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. awaiting his wife's plane when terrorists strike there and he once again must leap into action. Several years pass before we see McClane again. This time back working for the NYPD and now separated from Holly. He has to deal with Hans Gruber's brother Simon who has placed bombs all over New York City and McClane along with Harlem shop keeper Zeus must defuse. That was in 1995. Flash forward 12 years to 2007 and McClane is sent on a simple task of picking up computer hacker Matt Farrell for questioning for the FBI when once again terrorists strike and shut down the nation's computer systems. McClane is set to return for a 5th time with the upcoming A Good Day To Die Hard, as he visits Russia to help his son, a CIA operative track some thieves who plan on hijacking some nuclear weapons.

Abilities: McClane is street smart and very inventive when under duress. More of a everyday fighter with no real particular fighting skills ala karate or judo. Handy with all kinds of firearms. Is a licensed pilot. And quite the talker. Known for wise-cracks in grim situations. Catch-phrase is yippy ki yay mother@#$%!

Top Classic Stars for week of Jan 20th-26th, 2013

Carole enjoys her spot as the top classic star for the week

Big news here on All Good Things as my favorite actress Carole Lombard grabs the top ranking of the top classic stars for the week for her first time ever. My recent post about the upcoming Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney, in which she is one of four top seeds, yielded 60 views over that week period. Is this a good sign for her upcoming run in the tourney? I hope so. Deborah Kerr lands in second place with 37 views thanks to a post about my recent viewing of From Here To Eternity. It's Kerr's first appearance on the rankings this year. Rita Hayworth continues to make her presence known by placing third, and making her 4th straight week appearing here. My main man Cary Grant, who was number one last week falls to 4th place while Anne Francis debuts at number 5 with a post yielding 12 views. The 3rd Annual Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney Selections

March Madness, All Good Things style, returns with the 3rd annual Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tournament. 128 actresses will be competing to see who will hoist the banner of favorite classic movie actress for 2013. Previous winners Irene Dunne and Ginger Rogers are ineligible to compete due to their respective wins. So a new champion will be crowned. Will they come from the 30's era as Irene and Ginger have done? Or will they come from another era? Will Natalie Wood (60's) or Grace Kelly (50's) who have both made the final four the past two years finally break thru and win the coveted trophy. Time will tell as the fun begins Sunday March 3rd. 2013 Favorite Movie Actress Tournament Banners

The Morning Movie - FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953)

Watching some of this classic film on TCM this morning before heading out to work. Top notch film with a super cast. It takes place at Pearl Harbor, a few weeks before the attack by the Japanese. Montgomery Clift who plays Private Prewitt, arrives at the base and immediately draws the ire of the commander, who wants him to be on the boxing team. Clift refuses and his life at the barracks becomes a living hell. A truly emotional and epic film with a cast that features Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, and Frank Sinatra. All give Oscar caliber performances especially Reed as a floozie who Clift falls for. And Sinatra is perfect as Private Maggio.

If It's Tuesday, Then It Must Be Grace Kelly..a short story

Just a short little story about Grace on my weekly series dedicated to her. Now it takes awhile to get to Grace but bear with me. It was many years ago when I was in the army and stationed in Germany. I was age 22 and it was my first time away from home. My girlfriend back home, Amy had broken up with me over the phone after I was away from her all of 6 months. So it took me awhile to start going out trying to meet new girls. And I did meet a few girls, some Americans and some Germans. But according to my fellow soldier and co-worker, Lisa, I had a problem which she gladly told me about. It went something like this, not word for word, but pretty much like this:

Let me set the scene first...I was outside the office looking out at the traffic on the streets of Germany, melancholy about my latest relationship problems. Sgt. Lisa Baker comes out...

Lisa: Hawes? what are you doing out here?
Me: Nothing..just thinking..
Lisa: what now? 
Me: nothing..damn..just..Tanya hasn't called me in days
Lisa: who?
Me: Tanya..the girl I met a few weeks ago..went out a few times..
Lisa: damn Hawes..you know what your problem is?
Me: ummm..gee I didnt know I had a problem.
Lisa: well you do..wanna know what it is?

Lisa: You are too nice Hawes. You treat these girls you meet too special.
Me: What are you talking about?
Lisa: Every girl you meet, you treat them like Grace Kelly..you put them on a pedestal. And you just met them.
Me: I do not...you don't know what you're talking about.
Lisa: really Hawes...the one girl you met when we all went out a few months ago..
Me: you mean Gabbi?
Lisa: whatever her name was? Did you not buy her flowers the next day? Did you not want to introduce her to the entire unit saying she was your destiny?
Me: ummm..not to that extent.
Lisa: or how about Kathy? She gave you one little kiss and you was ready to marry her right then and there...
Me: OK, ok, ok...maybe I am a little prone to fall in love kinda quick but I do not treat girls like Grace Kelly. There is only one Grace Kelly.
Lisa: Wake up Hawes! This is not the movies!
Me: I know..I know..

Then I don't remember much after that but thought it would be cool to share on this Grace Kelly day!

Top Classic Stars for week of Jan 13th-19th, 2013

Here are the rankings for my top classic stars for the week ending January 19th. My favorite actor of all time, Cary Grant lands in the top spot for the first time this year thanks to my birthday post about him on January 18th. Rita Hayworth moves up to the runner up spot with 49 hits of her summer pic. Elizabeth Taylor hangs in there at number three. My classic goddess of the month, Lucille Ball takes a drop from first to 4th place.Tuesday Weld re-enters the rankings after missing out last week in 5th place. And my favorite actress Carole Lombard moves up one spot to 6th. And Grace Kelly wraps things up with a 7th place finish. It was a pretty light week for me posting so I don't have ten stars to fill out the rankings. Hope to crank it up this week.
